This man was part of the 5th SF group, a huge KyoKuShin player from Utah, that stood 6ft 4, and weighed in at around 280, and his forte was breaking. During the war he would break wood, bricks, stone or whatever was available, and was constantly punching something harder than his hand was. In 1970 we went to a tournament in San Diego, and my friend was signing in when an older Oriental gentleman asked him why he held the pen like and icepick. The response was that the breaking and conditioning altered his hand to a point where he could no longer write as he was taught. The older man asked him what he used in his breaking, and my friend responded "wood, bricks and stone, etc.". The older man walked away nodding his head. Later in the day we were approached by this person again and my friend was asked how many boards he could break. The response was an honest "I don't know, I've never tried to do so many that I couldn't break them, but I guess around 8 or 10". The old man showed his hands and said "I can break that many, but my hands don't look like yours", and he walked away. Later that night, during the finals, there were several demos, and under the spotlight doing a kata, was the older Oriental man. When his demonstration was over, he walked towards us and said to my friend, "God made your hand to work the best for you, and now you try to make it better....You think you know more than God?"...It was the last time EITHER of us did any extreme breaking or conditioning...J. I assume she is more interested in a Hapkido school than something else, so... The following isn't in that particular area of San Antonio, but it is in the greater San Antonio area.
