Duncan hits the nail right on.... this thing can't be explained over a few lines of email. I have done several parking lot sessions at the Jackson USKMAF seminars, and they were well received. In case some folks wondered why I did not reply to this, given that I shared it with a bunch of DD people in Jackson, I just did not bother to answer because email just does not cut it for even a simple explanation. Perhaps a hands on parking lot thing when I am in Jackson next March might be of interest. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net These suggestions come for some of those Bunk Emails floating around about "IF YOU LOVE YOUR WOMEN MAKE SURE SHE READS THIS!" I have been teaching Women's Self Defense classes since 1988. These emails were floating around AOL when I first started. they drive me NUTS! At best they give vague information, at worst they give false info. And so I exit lurker mode to jump on a soap box and rant. Take it for what it is worth or just ignore me at your leisure. Let me walk through them point by point. First they always update it with references to things you have heard of to try and lend it more credibility. "Taekwondo", "New Orleans Tourist guide?", They always start by saying this comes from someone who "Trains with Steven Siegel", or is "Chuck Norris's body guard". Please DON'T past it on! Get proper instruction from a qualified instructor. Just like you would for any MA. Check AWSDA.ORG if you need some referrals. > 1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your > body. If you are close enough to use it, do! Very true. But they are not as effective or easy to use as heel palms and hammer fists. We do teach you to use them when you are in close. but they require more use of the hips and shoulders. This is problematic for many woman that are not in MA shape. Also they are not natural weapons. most untrained women need a lot of coaching to get to using them effectively. > 2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber > asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it > away from you....chances are that he is more interested in your > wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. > RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! And what if the other direction is into a closet? Actually toss it at them. Try this walk up to someone show them a tissue paper, then wad it up and throw it at their face. They know it is just tissue and not going to hurt them but watch them try and dodge it on instinct. Now try it with a purse. Also running is not always the best option. you can bet that the person you are facing is going to be bigger stronger and faster then you. It might be a good idea to break his legs or blind him first. > 3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back > tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like > crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has > saved lives. There is a story floating around of one person that did this. But I you better check it out on urbanlegends.com. In most cars the space that you have to access the tail light is so small you can't "kick it out". much less get your arm in there. Maybe your fingers will fit. Actually all cars that are made in the past few years have a trunk release handle in the inside. This is so you can just open the trunk by pulling it. if not you can try and find the cable for the trunk release. If not that and you have room to kick. Then kick the lid by the latch or even the quarter panels. It's always better to try and get yourself out of the situation then to wait for someone to "maybe" see you and come to your aid. (one year for Halloween I drove around with a arm hanging out of my trunk, never got a single question on it.) > 4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, > eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or > making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching > you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the > passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS > SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE. This is good advice. But not just women do this men do it as well. But for many that is just not an option, people with kids and infants, salespersons on the road, out of towners looking at maps, someone talking on their cell phone. And you don't have to jump in and drive. When you get in lock the doors and start the car. Then if someone approachs you, you can just drive away. Over them if need be. > 5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or > parking garage: > > A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the > passenger side floor, and in the back seat. Good always be aware. But be more aware of who might be walking toward you. The person hiding in the car bit is the stuff of hollywood. They are far more likely to be standing near by and following you to your car. > B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the > passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling > them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into > their cars. This one is the point that shows this person doesn't know anything about WSD. Name one serial killer that has used this tactic! More then 80% of all assaults against women are from someone they know. NOT in a dark parking lot. and Most of them occur in their own homes. The concept of someone jumping out at you in the dark is the ghost story that we have been told for decades. The truth is that you are far more likely to be attacked in your own home by someone you know. This thing that MOST Serial Killers do this or that just shows that the writer is just passing on the stories that they have heard. > C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, > and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat > nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, > and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER > TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.) Again watching all around is good thinking. Having someone walk you to your car is good thinking. But this is just trying to scare people. If the person is sitting there (like I do waiting for my wife very often) then pay closer attention to them. If you are really bothered by them then act on your feelings. Don't be feel silly about going back in and having someone walk you back out. But if you look an them and you don't feel threatened then just take extra care approaching your car. If they try and get out of their car when you are trying to get into yours. Then slam their door shut on their leg! > 6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are > horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot). NO NO NO NO! Elevators are just as dangerous. Use your brain. Stairs are great places to fight in if you are thinking more then they are. When you are up the stairs you have great advantages. When you are lower grab their feet and drag them down a couple flights. Stairs are no more dangerous then getting into an elevator with someone you have a bad feeling about. And you have options for fight\escape that you don't have in a stopped elevator. > 7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, > ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in > 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. > RUN! Half right. The average armed robbery lasts less then 15 seconds. Better to give them what they ask for and have them leave. UNLESS they ask you to do something that would put you in a more dangerous situation. Then run. (remembering to throw the tissue in their face first) NEVER NEVER NEVER leave the current scene of a crime with the predator. If they want you to go someplace else that means the whatever they want to do to you, they can't do where they are. The most important thing to know about these emails is that they focus on the Stranger jumping out at you in the dark alley/parking lot (Stranger danger). But the facts are that they person most likely to attack you is someone you know, and that you willingly let into your house. Husband/ex, boyfriend/ex, coworker, friend of a friend. The most common place for a women to be raped is in her own home. The second most common place is at work. CNN reported a on a survey few months ago that says 7% of all female college freshmen reported being sexually assaulted within the first two months of going away to college. Currently the most common rape situation being reported at crisis centers involves the use of drugs or alcohol to rendure the victim unable to fight back. These are the things that a good WSD class should be talking about. Thanks for letting me vent! To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Scott Totally agree - but thought I would pass on this. My aunt, who used to live in Houston, was driving her car and as she passed a lorry he started gesturing and making threatening gestures at her. Naturally, her being in a car, and him being in a large vehicle she stopped at the nearest gas station. So did the lorry. She got out of her car, and the lorry driver grabbed her and pushed her into the garage. Of course she was terrified - but turns out he was a good samaritan. >From his vantage point in his cab, he could see into her car, and specifically in the rear of the car - where a guy was hiding behind her seat. An uninvited guest! Not appropo anything inparticular, just was reading point 5 which bought this to mind! Anyway - just thought I would recount this story, as it is not an urban legend, it is family experience, and shows what being unaware of your surrondings can lead to.
