The dojang I teach at also has a good TKD program. The owner went to watch a black belt testing at another school.. he said that during the test all black belt candidates had to defend against a person swinging a baseball bat at them.. the technique they all used was to actually put their arms up in a double sudo block and try to grab the baseball bat with their hands as it was being swung at their heads!!! It is my biggest fear that someone with only a little knowledge become overconfident in their abilities. It seems to be VERY difficult to get the "public" to understand that a few self defense lessons does not make an experienced martial artist. While the classes are offered so that no one need walk in fear, how does one include the "common sense" issues without sounding condesending? This seems to be a difficult issue for all instructors invovled. That was not my intent. My information was slightly incorrect. Master Whalen was also of great assistance in finally getting Dan Piller his 1st Dan certificate from the KHF once John Johnson and Master Bae had left the organization. That said, Dan has no relation with Mr./Master Hackworth nor will he in the future. I can assure you that Dan Piller of Aurora, Co. my partner at Ki Martial Arts, is not a part of the organization. He tested at the debacle in Florida, spent almost a year trying to get his KHF rank, finally done with the help of John Johnson and personal calls to Korea, and then only receiving 1st Dan after testing for and allegedly receiving his 3rd. However, accordiing to the KHF, if he paid several hundred more dollars.......... Please let me know where this list may be viewed. Thank you. Master James, Could you please post this on the BBS and / or forward this email to all interested parties. Thanks. The reason I contacted Master Whalen in the first place was to ask him who I should contact at the KHF in Korea in order to get a refund for my testing fee. His response was that by asking for a refund I would probably end up getting the certificate that I tested for. This ended up being true, although they did ask for more money in order to get the rank I was told I would get. At that point it really didn't matter and I decided to just except the 1st Dan, because I had chosen to go another direction anyway. I made the trip to the testing/seminar in FL at Mr. Hackworth's school in order to learn and test in front of the KHF Pres. This is how Mr. Hackworth's ended up with my information that is posted on his web site. As it has been told many times since then, the event wasn't what it was billed to be. After that experience and subsequent experiences I decided that the KHF wasn't for me. I was even ask by a high ranking KHF member during the struggle to get the rank that I had tested for if I was "just looking for more paper to hang on my wall"? My response was, after 30 years in the martial arts I have plenty of "paper" on my office walls already. Since all of this drama appears to be the norm I have chosen that for me and my school that my time, effort, and loyally will now rests with the World Hapkido Association (WHA) , where I privileged to serve as a Director & USKMAF, where I continue to learn and train. In these two organizations it is about learning and teaching the Korean martial arts, and nothing else. Best Regards, Dan Piller Dante J. James, Esq. Think of a whip(first man made object to break sound the barrier im told), flexible bit of rope that can cause serious damage. Power is is generated by a wave of kinetic energy travelling down the length of the rope and out through the tip. You can apply similar principles to to your body movements to generate power. I think this as called a longtitudinal(sp) waveform, there are others like spiral waves. I have heard the ITF sine wave is a type of waveform from some masters and others claim it isn't. I really dont know myself. Colour projection is a wierd one, if you think of a certain colour when you strike it will have a similar effect to a ki ahp. Different colours work for different people, try hitting a heavy bag whilst thinking of differnt colours, if your strikes seem a bit harder with a certain colour then thats your one. Feng shui is all about object placement which will maximise the energy(Ki) in your surroundings. If you train/fight in an area with good feng shui then the martial artist will gain more energy(Ki) from the surrounding area.Ive heard internal stylists(Tai Ch/Bagua) use feng shui in thier stances apparently to maximise thier enegry flow. Wierd eh? I have gained some great results using waveforms but colour projection and feng shui just seem a bit far out for me. If you want to know more about this stuff you could PM my Masters im sure they would be happy to tell you more and can explain this a lot better than I can. jan@scotlandtsd.demon.co.uk markad@btinternet.com There are a few video clips of waveform strikes on this site, they are not fake, ive been on the recieving end of this type of strike many times and it will hurt you(a lot) even through a pad/kickshield. http://www.russellstutely.com Good forum on this site also. These guys would be able to answer to give you better answers than me. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stovall, Craig" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 9:15 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: soft breaking > Sounds interesting. George wrote: "There is a great difference between a soldier and a warrior. I was taught that a soldier and a warrior might have similar skills, but a soldier is subject to orders from superiors to govern his actions, while a warrior is held to a far higher degree of accountability in having to do a job, but is also shouldered with the responsibilities to do what is morally right no matter what the cost." I have the opposite feeling, and I'm wondering why. George, where did you learn your definition of warrior? A warrior is someone who is concerned with war, isn't it?. And for me, that's not a good thing. To me a warrior is someone who thinks too much about war and not enough about peace. A soldier is a person who does his job, and then comes back home to enjoy the fruits of his labors. I don't want to glorify war, so I don't glorify warriors. But I respect soldiers. As for the uniforms, one of my students picked up a great t-shirt at K-mart for me to wear in class. It shows a squirrel holding a stick and the blurb reads "Protect your nuts!" It may become our standard hapkido tshirt. :) Take care guys, Dakin dakinburdick@yahoo.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
