Much easier to demo in person, but here goes... Take two people working as a pair. Can be done with both being empty handed or both having blades or one having a blade and one not. A simple example is having the pair stand face-to-face in about an arm's length of each other. One throws a jab or lead hand stab while the partner remains w/in range, but counters with a simple parry. Then the person that just did the parry throws a jab back while the partner counters with a simple parry. Repeat, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. You quickly(?) develop a sense of timing, and flow with your partner. Now spice that up with the counter being a block instead of a parry. And/or a block/parry together. And/or a parry/parry together. Still going back and forth with your partner. Spice that up more with stepping. The attacker steps forward one step with his/her attack while the partner takes one step back. Then the person that just countered (and stepped back) now attacks (see above) while stepping forward one step as their partner takes one step back. Again, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. The partners must work together, trying to get the timing, the flow going instead of trying to just 'best' each other. Make sense? This is Ray Terry and I approve this message... --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] handgun defense To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 18:30:23 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Mr. Terry mentioned that there is a list on the website of firearms > training facilities. If you are close to Ayoob's LFI, run don't walk to the next class. LFI-1 is an excellent class. I highly recommend it. Unlike many schools, Mas doesn't just teach how to shoot, he teaches when to shoot and what -may- happen to you if/when you do. The dojang I teach at also has a good TKD program. The owner went to watch a black belt testing at another school.. he said that during the test all black belt candidates had to defend against a person swinging a baseball bat at them.. the technique they all used was to actually put their arms up in a double sudo block and try to grab the baseball bat with their hands as it was being swung at their heads!!! Are you kidding me??? Michael Tomlinson" dear god, are you serious???? to actually teach somebody that borders on being criminally negligent. just out of curiosity, how hard and fast were the attackers swinging the bats? and did any of the defenders actually intercept the bat with their sudo blocks? man, that's some scary stuff. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] oops!!! video clip again... Or taekyun? or taegyun? Maybe taekyeon? WHo knows?? :-) It all depends on which romanization system you use. There are several of them. The Korean government issued a revised romanization system a few years ago (turning Pusan into Busan), but some of the major Korean newspapers didn't agree with it, and followed there own system. Here's a link to the widely used McCune-Reischauer Romanization System for Korean Language http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/eastasian/korean_table/krntable.htm Hope it helps Best thing to do is learn hanguel (hangul? hang'uel??) and start using it -- mvg. The lower ranks do them with a dan bong and the upper ranks use a knife, we all practice them at the same time...EVERY CLASS..I am of the mindset that it develops your reflexes, sense of movement, confidence, and overall sensing of movement and timing as it pertains to blending with your opponent. What I believe is a waste of time and somewhat outdated is the static trade off of the reverse punch from your opponent while you move like a robot and block and counter. all while your opponent has his arm dangling statically out there while you move around him??... I have seen way too many "real" fights in my life and NEVER have I ever seen people move like "karate robots" outside of the dojang...Everyone knows how to throw a rudimentary left jab right cross combination and they will pommel you with it. The flow drills get you used to constant movement and a 3-dimensional scenario which is much more likely than the linear reverse punch deal we have all had to practice... I have been taught to truly condition the hand thoroughly to prevent damage, but to asorb impact. There was a skill I was taught called dead hand. It's just that. dead weight. The actual hand was as if lifeless totally relaxed and the power was transmitted strictly from the hips and the hand comes and strikes the opponent. The goal of this technique was not to hit hard (although it does for how it's done) but for internal damage. The simplified version would be like how you throw a freesbie (I spell that right?) Twist at the waist when then you whip out your arm just like you're launching a freesbie, but striking the opponent with the area some call the chicken wrist...lol. there is and will always be external force involve (unless you believe in "empty force") but the focus should be on intense concentration and chi flow. Jye Ed Howe wrote: hello everyone, I'm a long time observer and now i reply for the first time on the issue of soft breaking. I am a student of GrandMaster Rudy Timmerman. This man has taught me some if not a few principles of soft breaking, and what i have noticed here is that the term SOFT breaking entail the use of NO POWER none, nada, zip zilch and zero. If done correctly you can break bricks without spacers or boards, as well as rib or other bones. The only way i can explain this is to see SaJa Nim Timmerman at one of his seminars and get it straight from the horses mouth. Although i would like to explain, it is not my place and i would not deny anyone the knowledge this man has. _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list, 1800 members The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? vote.yahoo.com - Register online to vote today! --__--__-- Message: 14 Date: Sat, 23 Oct 2004 07:51:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Video clip Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net http://www.moosun-taichi.com/movie1/casul00.mpg --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
