Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Clint asked "Hello, Good day to all Masters and Practitioners! I have a question about "board-breaking". During the session my 7 year old daughter is having a hard time executing breaking the board, either breakable or wood. I know she's having fear of breaking her hand instead but how would any suggest to get rid off her fear? I've seen her execute all different types and kinds of techniques (no problem with her postures) and at the moment she's going to do it, she stopped at the board not following through. Any information would greatly appreciate. Thanks. Respectfully, Clint" Hi, I know I'm going to rub some folks the wrong way here, but it's my opinion that a 7 year old shouldn't be breaking boards. They have a lot of growing to do yet and the growth plates on the ends of their bones can be damaged. I've always been taught that there is no reason for a child that young to be doing any board breaking. I see it going on all the time however, I guess there are some safe ways for children to do breaks. Maybe palm-heel strikes and side kicks? Does any one have any data on the dangers/benefits of allowing children to practice breaking? Did my instructor err on the side of caution when he taught me this? If she has tried to break before unsuccessfully, my guess is that she is having fear of PAIN because sometimes it really hurts BAD when you don't break ... What type of technique(s) is she using to break with ... and what are the measurements of the board she is attempting? JC --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: Date: Mon, 8 Nov 2004 21:09:03 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Hwang kee research Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sir I am unsure of where we disagree on this subject. I read your post and everything you wrote appeared correct from my perspective. The only think I may not agree with is the name Hwa Soo Do. I recently attended HC Hwang's vision tour. He visited all ten regions of the SBD MDK in the US. These visits consisted of a 2 hour clinic with all participants, and 2 hour training with all Ko Dan Ja members, and a lecture on the history of the Moo Duk Kwan. HC Hwang personally stated that the name Hwa Soo Do (art of the flower hand) was an attempt to connect to ancient Korean history. The name having ties to the Hwa Rang people. although I do agree that what he was teaching was most likely a combination of Chinese martial arts learned from Master Yang, and Korean Tae Kyun. As for everyone using the name Tang Soo Do. I agree they were all using Tang Su Do/ Tang Soo Do/ Kang Su Do as well as Yudo, and Gum Do. Hwang Kee KJN was still using the name Hwa Soo Do in 1947, and although he had already adopted the name Tang Soo Do, when he wrote and published his first book in 1949. The book had the name Hwa Soo Do in the title. He did not establish the Korean Tang Soo Do association until 1953 JC --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
