When you have your technique down pretty good, though, then invest in a good heavy bag. To do so before I would think is a needless expense and also a temptation to ingrain "bad habits" before learning good technique. Who doesn't use a Roundhouse Kick???? BTW, I am sincerely interested. If there are instructors, and/or students out there who don't use it, teach it or ever learned it, I am very curious indeed. It is very nice to know that great teachers of Taekwondo shared your thoughts about kids who are learning at younger age. My daughter actually is not breaking boards using her hands but kicks and some elbow strikes depends on situation at her school. Besides, I wouldn't allow her to use her hands. Once again, I am very happy for all your ideas...Thank you very very much. KJN was born in 1936 started in the MDK at age 12 approx 1948 does not say when cho dan earned, but between 1950 and 1952 is probably a safe guess. Master D. Dunn may have more to add? I re read the pages you suggested and agree the first three students did not last, and that some may say that a first attempt at the Moo Duk Kwan failed. I see it as a struggle at the beginning with the name Hwa Soo Do, and the culture created by the Japanese but not a failure. It appears once he began teaching he never stopped. Anyway it really seems to have no real significance in history. IMHO JC --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: "the_dojang" Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2004 09:35:09 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Former Moo Duk Kwan Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Master Richards; Sir; I contacted the US Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation to research the dates of departure, ranks, and the dan numbers of all the people in your list. HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim will be looking in the Dan Bom book and verifying those for me and Master Phil Duncan is going to forward the information to me. What I can tell you is. HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim began training in 1954 at age seven. He received his dan at age nine. His dan number is #509. I will be able to confirm the others later but if Master JJ Shin's dan number is 658 (I have not confirmed this yet) he would have received it after 1956 none of which takes away from as a martial artist. The calendar I have may have been earlier, I have not pulled it out to look. It could have been in 1981 or so. As for the picture of Master Shin in the Gup manual 1985/87 he had left the organization and I can only confirm his rank with the Moo Duk Kwan (as soon as I receive it from HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim) As for a board of directors promoting him, again that was after he left the Moo Duk Kwan. With the Moo Duk Kwan only Hwang Kee could have promoted him, and it will be recorded in the Dan Bon Book. I know Master Shin left the organization in September 1982. There was a law suit between him and the US Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan that was not settled until 1985 As for Master Fararo, I know him and have trained with him and his students. He had a family of students in Region 6 with the last named David Cox. He left the organization in 1995 his last promotion with the Moo Duk Kwan was in 1991 to 5th Dan (Dan # 19986) I saw him many times at national events but last trained with him personally in Dallas at a seminar he taught in about 1991. Chuck Carlos Norris Dan # is 2819. I will confirm more as the information comes in to me from KJN Hc Hwang but I believe he left the Moo Duk Kwan as a 1st Dan shortly after returning to the US from Korea. Hello Charles: Makes them proud does it not:) BTW, I ask breaking at all levels and ages; however, I do NOT allow anyone under age 18 to break with anything that involves growing plates or thinly covered bone surfaces. Too much danger for permanent damage, and not worth it to offset the self-confidence we are trying to build with some easy breaking for young students and/or folks who need to build self-confidence. There ARE easy ways to do this without such risks.
