Sometime back there was a discussion on SABAKI (?) net that sought to examine the origins of the Roundhouse Kick as a unique technique. As far back as I think people were able to trace the technique was to a cadre of ex-pat samurai whose services were retained by the king of Siam to address some internal strife of one sort or another. Related to this was the ever-expanding net work of Japanese "entrepeneurs" (aka: "Japanese pirates") whose trading ventures were well-documented in both Burma and Thailand. I didn't mention the SIN MU HKD material as I would have to concede the possibility of Japanese influence. One tantalizing possibility would be to find a provenance in the form of a authenticated pre-Occupation curriculum that included the RH Kick. Sometime back there was an ad in my e-mailbox that touted a pictoral manual on Taek Kyon but was prohibitively expensive and seemed to be of dubious authenticity. There is also an individual who provides reprints of notebooks or manuals of Chinese traditions and it may be worthwhile to approach him to see if the RH Kick is reflected in any of the pre-Revolutionary arts. FWIW.
