I tried to get a thread going on this last year, but no luck on an author. I do have a friend in Kung Fu who says this looks astoundingly familiar to something he saw many years ago in the Chinese arts(he IS old so may not remember). Good luck on this, Sir, and please let us know if you find out who wrote this. Perhaps Bruce has seen something in those dusty old tomes he so dearly loves to explore? How about it, Bruce? Here is your AAU Taekwondo Newsletter for November 2004. AAU Taekwondo competitions feature both Olympic and Point sparring, and traditional Taekwondo forms, including WTF, ITF, and TSD/MDK forms may be performed. For more information visit http://www.aautaekwondo.org In This Issue *AAU National Team Members Make US Pan-American Team *Tournament & Events Schedule *AAU National Team Members Make US Pan-American Team According to the USTU, National Governing body for Taekwondo in the United States, forty-two athletes were invited to Colorado Springs this past October 15th to take part in a three day development camp to assess their knowledge, skill, athletic ability, and overall experience in all areas of Taekwondo. From among these forty-two elite players, sixteen (16) were chosen to represent the United States in the upcoming 2004 Pan-am Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic November 17-21, 2004. Among those chose were our own Fly Weight Team Members Jesus Armendariz of La Porte, Texas and Danielle Pelham of Bothell, Washington. Both of these outstanding athletes made the 2004-2005 National AAU Taekwondo Team by first qualifying for Team Trials through our National Championship in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida this past July and then winning Team Trials in Houston, Texas on September 12th in a round robin format with other deserving National Championship medalists! We are extremely proud of their accomplishment with the National Governing Body. "Representing the United States in International competition is the dream of all elite Taekwondo players", says National AAU Taekwondo Chairman, Mike Friello. "Having two of our own National Team Members rise to this level speaks volumes for the level of play within the AAU Taekwondo Program. We wish them and the entire rest of the National Pan-Am Team the very best of luck next month in Santo Domingo." *Tournament & Events Schedule February 5, 2005 Spar Wars Double Elimination Point Sparring (Non-Qualifying Sanctioned Event) Kennesaw, GA More information coming soon. Greetings... Not really a stretching "machine" like most would picture, but I would like to put in a plug for the Isomaxx: http://www.geocities.com/isomaxx2000/home.html I like the flexibility (pun intended) of it as you can use it to help with several different stretches, not just the side splits, etc. You can see some pictures on that page demonstrating some of the various stretches... They really help... Being pretty muscle-bound, I have to stretch A LOT to keep my flexibility... <> - Bert Edens Springdale, Arkansas --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 07:36:58 -0800 (PST) From: Neil Burton Subject: Re: FW: Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Roundhouse Kick To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net It is interesting to read this - in the ITF TKD that i have done, kicking below the belt is a big no-no. It has always seemed strange to me as taking out a leg can take out a threat/source of danger. I guess it is the focus on sparring safety that has fostered this obsession with "every kick must be above the belt" Regards Neil --- Jye nigma wrote: > especially to the side. > > Jye > > > "Jason Thomas (Y!)" wrote: > I think a Round House Kick to the knee is usually > very effective. > > Jason > __________________________________________________ > Do You Yahoo!? > Tired of spam? Thanks......" My first time posting...I own one, and I think they do help, as long as you don't rely solely on the machine. As a 40+'er who started TKD in my late 30's, I found it did help, as long as I continued to do my stretching exercises. Definitely a lot more painful, and a lot less fun, than stretching in class. I have noticed a lot of discussions about money and the martial arts. One recently about Master Whalen charging a small fee for a seminar, that it was obvious he didn't do it for the money. Let me ask you this...Would you go to a cheap Doctor? Do you take your car to a cheap mechanic? Would you go to a cheap financial advisor or cheap Lawyer? I would not! So why is it that it is not ok to charge a premium price for what we are teaching. If you really want to elevate the quality of martial arts we have to stop giving it away. By the way, None of this is directed toward Master Whalen, because I have the up most respect for him. He's worth more than what he gets paid. If you have a day job or just enjoy being poor, continue to teach and charge minimum wage. If you want to provide for your family, yourself and your students then we all need to re-evaluate what Martial arts is really worth and start charging it. This might open a big can of things. I agree with you. It is very possible to support yourself, school, and whatnot on your income from teaching. I am not one of those people, but do believe it is possible. I do believe that Master Whalen (whom I have never met) does not gouge as other people might. That is more what the topic was. There is charging a fair (and premium) price, and there is raking your customers (your students) over the coals. I believe this is possible for anything. If you do what you love and love what you do, support will come. -- Martin Von Cannon Instructor Tacoma, WA. Dojang A Black Belt is more than something you wear. It's more than something you earn.
