You are providing a service, and it is customary to be compensated for that service. We need to get away from the mythical master and back to reality. Masters were compensated in the old days by their needs being attended to. How is this different? If you choose an altruistic path, that is fine. If you choose not to follow an altruistic path, that is fine too. Just be honest, and represent the teachings you claim. I just read his new book last month after meeting him at a book signing and getting an autographed copy. BTW - IT was a pleasure to meet him, his wife and Howard Jackson (who I asked to sign a picture of him in the book too). Chuck Norris recieved his 1st dan black belt in Tang Soo Do while serving with the Air Force in Korea. Most of us know this. He then came back to the states and started teaching, opening the Chuck Norris Karate schools. (People knew what Karate was, but didn't know the Korean arts back then) Chuck then started competing so that he could gain recognition and attract more students. As we all know, he did very well and went on to win numerous tournaments. His students also did very well in competition, and his schools grew, so he must have been doing something right as a teacher, even though he did not have very high rank at the time. I just bring this up because as with everything, it depends. I've seen lower ranked instructors that really know how to teach, and do a very good job at it and have a very good understanding of what they are teaching, and I have seen higher ranked people that don't teach well at all. So, it depends. BTW - Besides being great to meet Chuck Norris, I like that the proceeds of his new book go toward his organization to help kids. This is a great example of how martial arts can benefit many. Thank you Ms. Kelly. Although this past year's journey has been difficult and I stumbled a few times along the way, the encouragements from my students and the students at Saja Nim's dojang carried us through. It is so very true Ms. Kelly, Saja Nim and all of his students in the Sault make everyone feel welcome. I am thankful that a few of my black belts, Mr. Dahl, Dr. Taylor and Mr. Mertes. are so very dedicated and willing to take over in my and PSN Keppers absence. Since I have been training with the following individuals since 2000, I was especially honored to see Mr. Keatley and Mr. Janisse promoted to Fifth Dahn and Mr. Fischer promoted to First Dahn. I would also like to thank Grandmaster Eugene Humesky for once again spending so much time with me. The training / testing was hard, the banquet was great and the life long friendships, priceless. As a fellow MDKer, Chuck was one of the first big names I recall from the late 1960s and 70s as he was actively fighting in the mid 60s thru the early 70s. But I don't know of any big name students of his, save perhaps non-MAists like Bob Barker, Steve McQueen, Priscilla Presley and Donnie & Marie. ??? Do your due diligence and seek qualified advice and then assess whether you are ready. We here on the list do not know you personally so we can't advise you specifically, only generally. What would you say to a guy who took college level courses regarding human performance, Asian philosophy, human anatomy, business courses, and had only a 1st or 2nd dan, who wants to open a martial arts school? It would seem to me, that the courses in the human sciences would help to make up for the experience lost from obtaining a high level black belt. I live in a small town with two tae kwon do schools in it one of them being taught at the YMCA. Neither instructor is going to give their blessings to someone who may very well be a serious business competitor. I would not want to teach the same material as those two instructors, I'd want something slightly different. Maybe a nonKorean method, say, Okinawan or Japanese. If you could give some feedback, I really appreciate it. Fred __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
