I will say that although he was sent to the US by Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim and did serve as the leader in the US. He did not issue any Moo Duk Kwan dan numbers. Dan Numbers were issued by Hwang Kee himself until his death and now by HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim only. This will hold true world wide, since Dan number 1 JC. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: "the_dojang" Date: Wed, 24 Nov 2004 21:45:19 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Dan Bons Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I know I am opening up a discussion that will no doubt reap response, however her it goes. When the founder of Tang Soo Do/ Moo Duk Kwan and the Dan Bon system Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim began issuing Dan numbers. We have to take in to consideration that most of the people being discussed hear were given there Dan numbers by him. Once they left the Moo Duk Kwan to start their own organizations. They were no longer Moo Duk Kwan members. Currently in the US Master Seiberlich (Dan Number 1815) is the most senior American member of the Moo Duk Kwan not including HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim (Dan Number 509) In Korea Master Chung (Dan Number 410) is the most senior active student in the Moo Duk Kwan. HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim, however is a 9th Dan and Master Chung is an 8th Dan. There are instructors in the US with lower dan numbers but they are not Moo Duk Kwan members. Some of the former members of the Moo Duk Kwan now use a dan bon system but I believe they started somewhere after the number they were issued by Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim. They would not have wanted to abandon that accomplishment, and if they started at 1 there students would have eventually passed there own Dan Number. Some will claim they are members of the Moo Duk Kwan because they have created a new organization with the name Moo Duk Kwan in it, but the fact remains that Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim created the Moo Duk Kwan and all others are just copies. The answer is NO." MC Reply Yes, but you would have to be as talented AND dedicated as someone like Dr. Kimm, H.Y. In the end you would have to have enough time to develop proficiency in both arts and the ability to compartmentalize concepts when practicing one art or the other. In reality when the fecal matter hit the oscilating fan you would practice one strategy that felt most comfortable to you and had muscle memory stored. I would guess that would be a blend of all the arts you had practiced long enough to have muscle memory. I do agree that you could have conflicting core philosophies that you would need to resolve to be a legitimate 9th Dan in one art or the other. In effect by reaching the 9th Dan level in one art, you would have to reject some parts of the core philosophy in the other art that you should be practicing at the senior master level. As has been indicated previously, someone can be MDK without being a current dues paying member of that specific organization. So when we ask about senior MDKers we are interested in more than only those that are currently members of one, and only one, specific organization.
