The 11-member committee, led by WTF vice president and IOC member Nat Indrapana of Thailand, will hold it first meeting Dec. 7-11 in Seoul and will review the rules of the game as well as the administration and marketing policies. The WTF also said it sent a questionnaire to 177 member associations last month and the responses from all over the world will be used as references in developing the reform policies. "Taekwondo is in a transitional period following a change in WTF leadership," WTF president Choue Chung-won said. "The WTF aims to transform itself into a more global, professional and efficient international federation, in line with the IOC's ongoing reform efforts" Since the Athens Olympics this summer, Taekwondo has been criticized by the media that the matches are relatively boring and the refereeing is somewhat subjective when compared to other Olympic sports. In a press conference in September, Choue said the WTF would consider allowing the use of punches in the game and giving additional points to spin-kicks, which require more technique. He also said the WTF has been talking with sports apparel company Nike to develop electronic devices to help the judging. Choue was elected president last June to fill in for former president Kim Un-yong, whose tenure ends in April. Kim, founder of the WTF, resigned in January because of a bribery scandal. 12-01-2004 16:37 --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 18:02:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] 8th Dan for Master Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have an old article around here somewhere from long long time Judoka Phil Porter. In his rank outline one did not become a Judo Master until they reached 8th Dan. FWIW Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 21:12:01 -0500 (EST) From: "A. My reply is: As a student of Haidong Gumdo, I have had the pleasure of practicing cutting with a variety of media: broad sheets of paper, bamboo, bundles of rice stalks, tatami mats, saplings, and rubber poles designed to simulate bamboo. What kind of experiences were you interested in hearing about? ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Johnjfitzg@aol.com Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 21:41:09 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] 'popular' MA rags cannot be trusted Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray commented, “You have just shown that the various 'popular' MA rags cannot be trusted to dispense facts or the truth. TKD Times, Blackbelt, etc are mostly jokes, places to run advertising for …” Unfortunately, I have to agree that the reporting and stories are of very poor quality. I remember an article on Hwang Kee, the founding father of …, after his death. The dates and the number of years between events in Hwang Kee ’s life did not add up at all in the article. I was surprised how obvious the errors were and that an editor had not resolved them before publication. The quality of the article was not unusual for these “'popular' MA rags” , IMHO. I will have to check out the “Journal of Asian Martial Arts”. Do they have a web site?
