These articles extolled the virtues of the arts and praised one master in a piece a wrote. I wrote a subsequent article that spoke about the current practice of giving away belts. the last article was not published. My experience as a writer is that only those pieces that are light and praiseworthy or critical of someone like Un Young Kim will be published. If you want real martial arts, read the Journal of Asian Martial Arts. Everything else is commercial and disingenuous. My training has been quite limited of late due to the severe all consuming pain coming from the left foot and I couldn't "tough it out" any longer. Does anyone on the DD have any experience with this treatment? Doc said up to 7 weeks to heal for something so bad inflamed as one of the feet were and minimal time for the other. I guess what I'm asking for is something that might speed up the recovery time. I'm doing stretches for the tendon as advised, and do not know if there is anything else I could or should do beyond the ordinary to expedite the healing process. Your advice and input is always appreciated. Andy is on Cloud 9 over the entire experience. I am told that Mr. Nisenoff went way out of his way to make sure my student was experiencing as much as he could from the seminar. I want to thank Mr. Nisenoff, Master West, and the many other Instructors who were present for treating a student of mine soooooo well. I heard it was a great turnout too. Getting a report like this just makes me want the March 11-13 weekend to hurry up and get here for the big carpet inspection in Jackson. Again, thank you to everyone who worked with Andy and showed him such a terrific time! MC Reply FWIW in the late 1980's when I started in JRI we were taught knee up and outside the target chamber for round kick and that the thigh moved across the target first. The knee forward method I think is a sparring adaptation. As early as the WTSDA 1990 World Championships all the 3rd dans used this in point fighting. I believe this is the method taught by Sang H Kim and Coach Han Lee's videos. It is what I use for WTF and point sparring. I have been in contact with HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim about some records concerning Dan Bons. He has told me he will be glad to get the information for me, but due to his schedule it may take some time. I will be seeing him in January during the Ko Dan Ja Shim Sa. As for Master Shin, his Dan number is 698. I can not at this time confirm the date he achieved that number but it is one of the questions I asked of HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim. HC Hwang began training in may 1954 at the age of 7. He received his Dan Number of 509 at the age of 9. This would be during 1956. So Master Shin would have been promoted shortly after and possibly during the same year. The Moo Duk Kwan Dan Numbering system is sequential. It began with Dan Number one and is now at approximately 45,000. The Moo Duk Kwan Dan Bon system does however have some reserved numbers as you described in the WTSDA. I know several instructors that have joined the Moo Duk Kwan and were issued a Dan number (after being tested) that was reflective of their time in training. I understand these reserved numbers are in small blocks every 1000 or so promotions. Hwang Kee Kwan Jang Nim was doing this for some time. Some of the instructors I am referring to are sixth dans that joined the federation in the late 1970's. The only studio type I do not recommend is racquet ball courts, health clubs, etc. You need a Do-Jang that will promote the right training environment, with the least amount of distractions. It was my experience from my earlier days. It is hard to achieve either, unless you have control over the training area. I recommend a free standing building if that is available. It just allows you more options. Gm West has mentioned that Gm Han was using the knee forward chamber in the mid/late 1960s. I recall that I first saw it (or recognized it) and began to use it in 1984. It would seem that the knee forward chamber would not come from a Taekkyon person given their focus on sweeps and tripping movements. The knee forward chamber seems to be more oriented toward percussion, not sweeping the opponent to the ground as one does in Taekkyon. Dakin??? Thoughts from others? I'm just interested in where this may have first originated.
