Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Kevin: "......I think Martial Arts original intent was to overcome an intended enemy in the begining. Warriors had a mission to do, They studied their objective and practiced skills to complete their intended objective, without fail. They studied their enemy, and prepared how to overcome them by any means necessary. Military leaders used martial discipline to keep order in the troops and prepare them mentally for combat. How to make split second decisions on the battlefield without hesitation......" To my way of thinking what you are speaking to is many times more important than simply being able to defend oneself with a given technique. Nice post. Military training is not just about teaching a particular skill, but is much more about teaching a particular way of dealing with a situation, with an enemy, with comrades, and with problem solving. I don't think this goes away when the folks who are participating in the training are a bunch of civilians who sign-up for the experience at their local dochang. Certainly these people want to learn to take care of themselves and their property and loved ones. But a key point that gets lost is the venue they are choosing to learn these skills, because the venue is also intended to shape their thinking as well. Fact is that the average person will probably not have many, or any, opportunities to use much of the techniques taught in a Hapkido class. To my way of thinking thats not as important as whether that same persons' values and thinking have changed about what they believe about themselves, how they work with others, how they deal with frustration and contradiction and conflict. THESE changes are what puts the "martial" in "martial arts". FWIW. I'm very hands on with my teaching, often putting people's body parts in the correct position. However, I always ask the first few times if I can enter that person's space....." Absolutely!! Trust is huge from a number of views. When learning breakfalls the individual needs to learn to trust themselves and their ability. When working with partners the individual needs to learn how to build rapport with that training partner so that they can focus on learning without getting distracted by trying to avoid pain dished out at a level they can't handle just yet. The two keys that I see in this are Time and Communication, and I must say that I often don't see a lot of investment in these things by some schools. heres' a couple of examples. To me, learning to breakfall is very important in Hapkido. Having poor BF skills can put a person at risk, and cause them to put another at risk. When I teach these skills I give the student as much time as they want because I know that even a small bad experience can cause them to become gun-shy about BF for a long time into the future. The same with working with a partner. I expect partners to talk to each other and tell each other what is acceptable pain compliance, what is too much force, and what effective or ineffective. Without this communication, the class devolves into a bunch of scared kids too worried about being hurt to concentrate on what they are learning. lastly, between the students and I there needs to be trust. Trust that I have their best interests at heart. Trust that I will challenge them without overwhelming them. Trust that I can coach and encourage without bullying or dominating. Sadly, I must also report that Trust is a very delicate commodity. As much as I work on it all the time, any good teacher will tell you that it can get blown away in a second and be a long time returning. FWIW. When I see Hapkidoists use the old tug of war syndrome with their arms and their opponents arms I think,, hmmmm you missed the basic stepping importance,,, let's face it, it all works with your partner but will it work against a bad guy? That is where the basic motion becomes your true equalizer...the weapon techniques are exactly the same... you don't learn a new set of standard movements to use a weapon... and if you do... you better scratch your head...
