And what in particular did you take offence at or base your opinions on? Kind regards Bernie Maginnity -----Original Message----- From: Dave [mailto:tkdwarrior@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Saturday, 8 January 2005 7:17 PM Hello all I have a question to pose. If you, say were to decide to train in an art (some of you might have to think a while back here ;-) right, and upon attending one of their 3-monthly gradings, saw that, realistically, only about 2 in every 10 black belts could actually hold up in a fight, would you train with this orginisation? --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J R Hilland" To: Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2005 01:00:55 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Age & Martial Arts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Outstanding!!! Please edit the HTML code into plain text for an easier read, but keep up the good work! Maybe as a printable copy on the website? Now we need to ad on Anthony's comments about learning the whole art and we may just end up with a syllabus for hapkido 101: the real deal. Jere R. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> This kind of goes back to my post the other day regarding "what is most useful". There's a whole lot of "depends" that have to be addressed here. Do they claim to teach people how to fight? If not, then that's not a problem. If so, then there's a big disconnect between what they say they're doing, and what they're actually doing. In that case, we're probably talking about an organization with some flaws. Then again...what are YOU interested in doing? Do you want fight training or fitness training? Or, do you just want general health and self-improvement? Could they help you along those lines? You said that about 20% of their BB's look like they can handle themselves. Who's to say that you wouldn't be part of that 20% if you trained there? In the end, what you become is up to you. Talk to the instructor about your goals, and see what he says about how he can help you out. The closest hapkido school that I would trust as real is in Fort Wayne,IN. I have never been there to see for myself, but Master West has done seminars there before, so I think its a safe bet that the people running that dojang are the real deal. Its too bad real hapkido cannot be adequately perfected in a short amount of time, say four years or I would seriously consider making the two hour round trip voyage to Fort Wayne and then open up a real hapkido dojang in my own town. For now I'll stick with the "judo only" dojo in Marion,IN. At least I know I'm getting what I'm paying for. Fred __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? I just finished up a heavy power cycle on the weights, and I'm gonna lay back for a few weeks and do a lot of BW stuff as well as some 'high-rep/low weight' lifting in order to recoup for the next push. I live in a part of Florida that doesn't have any reputable Tae Kwon Do schools that recognize my 2nd dan from the AAU without making me start all over at white belt (this would be my fourth time through the ranks in 22 years). In that I spent the last three years under the impression that I would be able to test for my third dan through the AAU, I haven't been paying too much attention to any of the recent movements of thought about dan certifications. Does anybody on the listserv know of any organizations that will a) recognize AAU dan certification and b) allow its members to test "at large" without required to join a club? I tell ya, I didn't feel old UNTIL I tried this. LOL! First few sets - no biggie. Then it got tougher and tougher. Then I started watching the clock like Mark Coleman did with his superfight on UFC. Then I laid down and prayed the ambulance would come....just too tired to call them myself. :) Reminds me of the "Drop 10" on bench press. We would put a weight on the bench rack that a person could do for 8-12 reps and then stacked out the bar with 10lb weights. Get three spotters with one on each end and one in the middle. Unrack the bar and push as many as you can - then the center spotter holds the bar over you (no racking for rest) while the two on each side take off a 10lb plate (actually dropping 20lbs). Then rep out - and the cycle repeats itself until you are down to the bar. We were allowed to cheat on the last rep only with a slight arch in the back - otherwise, back flat and feet on the floor. And in about 4-6 minutes, there you are....back arched and wiggling like a worm that just crawled onto hot concrete...with just an unloaded bar stuck on your chest. About that time, some little honey walks through as you blow you guts out and your "buddies" watching on. Man, those were the days. LOL! Thanks for the different exercise.
