Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> I suppose the story would help. i was until recently a part of this orginisation (TKD). now until recently i'd been going along fine, quite enjoying the art. A few months ago the 2nd dan instructor i was under passed on the centre to two 1st dans who'd been assisting him for quite a long time. Now fair enough, that was ok. When, however i came up to test for my 1st gup, and declined with the reason ">I< dont believe i'm ready to test yet" (as if you go to every testing it's 1 and a half years to get a bb with the org. i simply think this is too rushed) the two instructors did not appear to accept that. instead, recently i have been verbally abused in class, in front of the whole class, repeatedly. This i found unsavoury. It didnt help the instruction then recieved also went to mush. However i could easily have remedied this by going to another center. This prompted me to step back and have a look at the org. itself. Given that the whole premise of the org was to teach "effective self-defense" using TKD and the quality of the 1st dan black belts i'd seen sparring, breaking and testing, i came away with a rather sour outlook on my continuance of training with the org. I myself was in it to learn the art of tkd, while keeping fit, flexible and healthy. To chose btw fight and fitness training i would have to choose fight. Relating back to a previous discussion, i did choose a martial art, not a martial sport, so self-defence was always on the agenda. <<>> - good point, i'm now in the process of looking for a new art. Thanks for the discussion. Some very good points Mr Stovall. No Hapkido schools in the Charleston, SC area. My schedule doesn't facilitate a lot of traveling. I think the closest thing here would be Aikido. I have posted before asking some of the list members if they had any experience in Aikido; and what organizations within the Aikido community that they felt were the "real deal". So I will post this question again. I plan to study Aikido in addition to TKD. I do not know anyone in Aikido and would appreciate any tips or caveats with respect to organizations and what I should look for in an Aikido school. Please email me privately if you feel it is necessary. The closest hapkido school that I would trust as real is in Fort Wayne,IN. I have never been there to see for myself, but Master West has done seminars there before, so I think its a safe bet that the people running that dojang are the real deal. Its too bad real hapkido cannot be adequately perfected in a short amount of time, say four years or I would seriously consider making the two hour round trip voyage to Fort Wayne and then open up a real hapkido dojang in my own town. For now I'll stick with the "judo only" dojo in Marion,IN. At least I know I'm getting what I'm paying for. Fred __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? He and his wife own and run the dojang. He teaches and she runs everything behind the scenes. He is a student of Master West. It would be worth the short trip. When I was in Cincinnati he often came down and trained with me. Now, my Cincinnati dojang folks go train with him on the weekends. When I was in Cincinnati, as I had the only hapkido dojang, students often traveled 1+ hour one way, just because they lived on the other side of the city. So it really is just about how serious you are. But I currently have students that make a 2 hour round trip to the dojang in Fargo 3x a week. Nearby towns in ND are few and far between. In fact, when the snow is real bad, everyone has a 2 hour round trip! :) But I don't see how anyone in most anything could be an instructor in 4 years. A chodan is after all, a beginner yudanja by definition. Jere R. It seems to be from Tony Manifold at http://www.members.shaw.ca/tmanifold/remembering_bruce_tegner.htm One thing that Tony didn't mention is that Bruce's parents worked in Hollywood, where they taught judo and raised collies. And yes, they actually published an article with the title "Teach Your Collie Judo." With folks like that, Bruce had a definite leg-up on the martial arts game. Anyone else have a copy of his Savate book? :) And does anyone know if he is still around today, or where his family is? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<<<>>>> This is just a comment about how looks can be very deceiving ... I have trained at a seminar with an Instructor who was over 80 years old. By all appearances, he SURE couldn't "hold his own" in a fight. In fact, early on during his demo (before the seminar), there were a couple of studly, manly man guys who were making that observation, thinking he could not hear them. They were saying "I'd just punch him off in his head", just short of making fun of him, that sort of thing. Low and behold, one of those studly guys suddenly became uke ... all I can say is OUCH!!!!! While certainly any able bodied young person could run from this 80+ year old instructor, you'd better not make the mistake of touching him; trust me on that. Just an observation, for what ever it is worth.
