There were 2 members testing for 7th Dan, 6 members testing for 6th Dan, 18 testing for 5th Dan, 26 testing for 4th Dan. The test was a week long and tested the limits of physical conditioning and mental toughness. training/testing began at 6 am every morning and lasted until around midnight each night. We were then expected to complete written assignments. Sleep was not a luxury we were afforded. We continued to tell ourselves "Discipline is easy when your fresh" Its when you not fresh that you character shows. The testing was conducted by HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim (Son of Grandmaster Hwang Kee). It was not for the recreational martial artist. Members testing were from the USA, Mexico, Peru, and Australia. It was an opportunity I will not forget. For a family of four we pay 174.00/month. For this price we get unlimited TKD classes (as scheduled, five days per week). Included in this price also is a membership for myself to the school's cardio/pilates class which meets four times/week, and a membership for my husband to the "urban survival" class which meets twice/week. We have been attending TKD classes as a family since about September of 2004 and it has been a blast! I have never been a physically active person, so it is exciting to finally find exercise that I can enjoy. When compared to a family membership to a local fitness center the price may be a little higher at Marshall TKD Academy, but the benefits of health and fitness, character development, and camaradie with classmates and instructors makes the product well worth the price. On a side note: I've lurked here reading the digest for a while, and it has been interesting to read the various discussions on KMA and learn more about it all. Best wishes to all of you, and have a good week! Not sure I understand the question. Where I teach people show up and they get taught. If they don't show up they don't get taught. If you attend you accrue mat hours. If you don't attend you don't accrue mat hours. No mat hours; no test. No test; no promotion. Am I missing something here? I was reasonably sure everybody in the Hapkido community had some version of this approach. In our TKD dojang, in order to be considered for belt testing recommendation, students must have maintained these minimum attendance percentages over the three months prior to the testing: Yellow 65% Orange 70% Green 75% Blue 80% Red3 90% Red2 95% Red1 100% Sincerely, Jeff Yeagley Chief Instructor Academy of Fighting Arts Business Phone: 816-525-5555 Email: jeff.yeagley@wetrainharder.com Web: http://www.wetrainharder.com --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "James Allison" To: Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 12:07:17 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Fees Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Why is that 75-140 dollars a month nuts? Is the school no good? Is the Instructor not worth the fees or do you not associate the value to the Martial art training? And, why do you feel bad about charging $35 for classes? Think about it, we are probably the only industry that can affect people's lives mentally, physically and philosophically while teaching a valuable skill. The other thing could be the volume of work you're now doing. I don't know how you regularly do your workouts, but if you're inclined to do 50 straight and then call it a day on the pushups then you're doing much less volume than under the 20-minute protocol. If you scored a 20 (sets) on the protocol then that's 120 pushups doing it your way (6 per set). Not sure if you're used to do doing that many. That could be part of it...pure volume of work. Even if you're used to that much volume you may not be used to doing it in that type of compressed time frame. In other words, you're giving your body less recovery time within the workout itself. The more likely culprit is that you're doing them at a much higher intensity now. Drop to the floor and do 5 pushups as rapidly as you can. Rip them off like your life depended on it. Take note of how fast you can do them. Now try to do 50 or 100 straight at that same rapid pace. Doesn't work does it? The key is that you're accessing a different metabolic pathway(s) (phosphogenic and glycolytic) when you do anaerobic work as opposed to aerobic work (the oxidative pathway). I don't have my literature in front of me, but I do believe the anaerobic pathways are a bigger culprit when generating waste materials and eliciting lactic acid build-up. The good news is that you will build tolerance for this and the delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) will eventually go away. The effect on the heart and lungs is quite amazing isn't it? Just take it easy and don't push it too soon. Hope you get good results. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "ISA Headquarters" To: Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 12:38:26 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Hapkido Seminar in Texas Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net On February 5, 2005, Master John B. Wise, 57, performed his moves just three months after surgery on both knees and was one of the 80 students in the academy who competed for higher ranks on tournament day, Saturday, the Associated Press reported. Wise did not seek re-election last November as state governor because of taekwondo. "How do we deal with that stress and how do we focus our energies to what's important? Taekwondo is about the best school for learning that I know," he said. 2005.01.18 --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Gordon" To: Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 12:48:29 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Dan Guel - Meaning?
