It is the same greeting that all members of the KATUSA (Korean Augmentee to the United States Army) program use when saluting higher ranking soldiers. So, how did you do?? Did you get promoted? Did you learn any new techniques? Did you learn any new ways to do old stuff? Did HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim (Son of Grandmaster Hwang Kee) change any forms/ poomses? Just a few questions from a "recreational martial artist." ( I have not used my skills in real fight since the 1970's. I do it more for pleasures these days. Hey, I just enjoy the MA workout. I also have my wife and kids in it. I hope they never need it, but my daughter has used it very effectively in high school. ) cheers John --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 17:50:30 -0800 (PST) From: "L. Veuleman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Fees Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net DIGEST, <>> Wow, I guess thats not soooo bad. thats what like 40-45 bucks per person. I could live with that, especially if the whole family was really into it. I'd pay 40 per kid/spouse. Not quite sure what the urban survival class is, but I have some ideas :) Didn't know Marshall was so urban :) Theres gotta be a Stoval post around here somewhere... All joking aside, thats great. It really makes me happy to see families working together like this. Sounds like your "Martial Arts Center" offers alot that ya'll are looking for. Keep on doing what ya'll are doing. ------------------------------------------ <<<>> I don't know about the instructor, but the program...ehhhhh.... Maybe in a higher, more expensive market. This is SHREVEPORT LOUISIANA. The rate for not-so-favorable jobs here is still 5.15-5.50 per hour. In a larger market, maybe where those type jobs payed a little more, like new york or something, it would be more conceivable. Might not seem like that is even important, but I beleive it to be a huge factor in operational planning. <<< And, why do you feel bad about charging $35 for classes? Think about it, we are probably the only industry that can affect people's lives mentally, physically and philosophically while teaching a valuable skill. Just my .02 cents which to some is worth gold to others dirt. James Allison Georgia Sin Moo Hapkido >>>> Yes, we effect peoples lives all the time. Think about the student who can't afford to pay, how happy he is when you touch his life by allowing him to work out, and just clean up the dojang? But thats not the point here either. In a world of inflation in everything we see, its nice to see the smaller schools out there that only charge a minimal amount. Master Richards calls these clubs, and for all intensive purposes, thats what they are. Easy killa. The point of my post wasn't to try and get everyone on the digest to lower fees. My point was to share my initial reaction when I asked the fees at these places. I expected around 50, 140 kinda blew my mind, hence the post. It was my initial reaction though, and it could be the reaction of your potential students as well. Owning your own business/school is hard, I understand that as well as anyone. If you don't mind me asking, what are you charging? Charlie Veuleman 2nd Dan --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Greenbrier Tae Kwon Do Academy" To: "Dojang Digest" Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 22:10:49 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: US Gov wins TKD belt Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray posted from the Korea Herald: U.S. governor wins taekwondo black belt The Korea Herald Bob Wise, ourtgoing Governor of the U.S. state of West Virginia, won his black belt on Jan. 15 in Kwon's Tae Kwon Do Academy, 20 years after his initial attempt. Wise, 57, performed his moves just three months after surgery on both knees and was one of the 80 students in the academy who competed for higher ranks on tournament day, Saturday, the Associated Press reported. Wise did not seek re-election last November as state governor because of taekwondo. "How do we deal with that stress and how do we focus our energies to what's important? Taekwondo is about the best school for learning that I know," he said. Response This made the Korea Herald?? Wow. Probably because Gov. Wise's Sa Bum is Master Sok Ho Kang. Being from WV, having met Gov. Wise on a few occassions and knowing Master Kang, I'd like to offer some corrections about that posting. First, he began TKD 20 years ago, not testing for his 1st Dan 20 years ago like it reads. I was at the tournament that then-Congressman Wise broke a rib during sparring at one of Master Kang's tournaments. He then laid off of TKD due to the injury and his persuit of his political career. When his son was old enough to gain interest in TKD, he rejoined with him under Master Kang. So, it did not take him 20 years of continuous training to gain 1st Dan. Second, there was no "tournament day". It was a simple test day like all/most schools do. Third, he did not seek re-election due to getting caught up in an affair/scandal that he got caught in. He figured the voters of WV would not put a cheating husband/governor back in office.(Just my opionion...:) Whether he did it or not, I don't care but that is the word around the state) I like Master Kang and he has had many high-profile students. Just glad to see him in the news.
