I will not know the result until March, although I feel good about the test, and my performance. Stovall We were provided with Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. There is a medical staff at the testing all week to monitor all the candidates. We were only allowed water during training and juice or Gatorade during recovery time. Meals were high in Proteins, and most candidates were taking Tylenol a couple of times a day to prevent knee and ankle swelling. As for weight loss most candidates did loss between 10 and 20 lbs during the test. Some, I would assume was water weight, but there were some physical change happening as well. Every person testing for a Master Rank in the Moo Duk Kwan (US Soo Bahk Do) must endure this process. It weeds out the people that just want an easy rank, It helps to standardize the organization because the instructors are all leaning from the same source. It also keeps people from becoming professional teachers without maintaining themselves as practitioners. I was proud to be there. Requirements varied from each group (4th Dans, 5th Dans, 6th Dans, and 7th Dans) Our final project was 29 pages long for our group. This was not a case of 20% doing 80% of the work. Everyone was involved, and the experience brought us all closer together. I live in Longview, and know Master Gene Riggs in Marshall (He teaches Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan) I did not know there was a TKD school there." Greetings to a local fellow martial arts enthusiast! I think I know of the school you are speaking of, I believe it is on Hwy 80 across from the catholic church. The school I attend is called Marshall Tae Kwon Do Academy. It is located near the Marshall High School on Five Notch Road across from the Boys and Girls Club. It is a fairly new place, I think it was opened less than a year ago. We sometimes get visits from students from Longview, although I'm not sure what school they are from. All in all its a great school, very family and community oriented and as far as I'm concerned well worth the tuition. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 18:42:48 -0500 From: ABurrese@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Hwarangdo Experience Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net There is a new complex in Sokcho that has demonstrations of the calvary arts from ancient Korea. You can see the official site here: www.HWARANGDOEXPERIENCE.COM The site is in Korean, but there are pictures. Looks like an interesting place to visit. I've been to Sokcho many times, since it is just a little ways North of Kangnung. I'm planning on going here during our 2005 trip. It may be a great place to go during the 2006 trip that I am thinking of planning that will be for my students and others who want to go to Korea for some HKD and other attractions. There was also an article at the Korea Herald website regarding this new complex in Sokcho. Yours in Training, Alain www.burrese.com --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2005 18:14:09 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] Hwarangdo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Visit Korea's best tourist city, Sokcho Hwarangdo Experience Tourism Complex The Korea Herald There was once a youth training organization called Hwarangdo in Shilla (57BC ~ AD 935) from the period of the three Kingdoms. Young men from across the nation were trained in various forms of martial arts under the leadership of Hwarang, and they grew up to serve the greater cause. This arena of training from the ancient time was recreated on the shore side of Yeongrang Lake. Performances of cavalry martial arts, horseback routines, and polo game are staged two times a day except during the winter. Visitors can participate in the practice and learning of the ancient martial arts as well as horseback riding, archery, and catapult. The most popular program is the catapult experience in which 3~5 persons have to combine strengths to shoot the stones. Interview Reporter: For what reason did you found this place? President Kim Young-sup: Majority of both Koreans and foreigners can name Taekwondo as Korea's traditional martial arts. I wanted to lead the ancient culture revival of cavalry martial arts. R: I heard that all the performers in the complex are masters of the ancient cavalry martial arts. Do they also teach and perform? P.Kim: Yes, all fifteen instructors from the complex are masters of the ancient cavalry martial arts. Unfortunately, I am not able to pay them handsomely, and you can tell that they are doing this because they like it, and not because of money. R: What is the biggest strength of the complex as a tourist site? P.Kim: The beautiful nature of Korea awaits you on Seorak Mountain, and you will learn about the culture of ceramics and pottery at Seokbong Museum of Ceramics and Pottery. What about dynamic spirit of the Korean people? I believe this is the place for that. Many people were surprised by the enthusiasm and passion of Korea during the World Cup 2002. It is because they do not know us well. Your experience of Korea's ancient cavalry culture in the complex will tell you how brave Koreans have been since the beginning of days. It is unfortunate that this side of Korea as a nation was suppressed in Joseon Dynasty period (AD1392 ~ 1910) when the pen was given priority over sword.
