By the instruction of their teachers and from the teaching experience itself. As well as learning from those who teach us, we also learn from those we teach. "Most people who undertake a martial arts programme have a goal, and more often than not that goal is to achieve the rank of black belt. When I started in martial arts almost 40 years ago, a black belt was a rare thing indeed! At that time, probably the only black belt most students had seen was that worn by the class instructor. These days they are much more common. With the average time to black belt in most styles being 3 - 4 years, most people even outside the martial arts, know someone who is a black belt. And most students will probably have seen a dozen or more. What hasn't changed is the responsibility that goes with the dan grade. I'm not talking about the responsibility of not abusing the art or only using the skills in self-defence or defence of the weak, although these of course hold true. What I mean is the responsibility of maintaining the flow of knowledge. Black belts are generally referred to as "Sensei" or "Sabum nim" which means 'teacher' and each black belt has a responsibility, an obligation, to teach as well as to learn. There is an understanding among martial artists that we never stop learning no matter what grade we achieve. My own teacher, Grandmaster Kimm He-Young, although holding the rank of 9th dan in 3 martial arts as well as 8th and 7th dans in others, returns to Korea frequently to learn from his teachers. Last year I observed him learning from a sword master alongside the rest of us while on a trip to South Korea. As importantly though, we who have achieved the dan grade - 1st, 2nd, 3rd or whatever, must teach others so that they too can progress. Imagine if somewhere way back in history, all black belts had suddenly decided that they didn't want to teach anymore, only learn. None of us today would be able to pursue the arts we love so much. Why? Because they just wouldn't exist! O.K. there might still be some cave paintings or ambiguous documentation but the knowledge would have come to a grinding halt. Martial arts is a 'hands on' skill and has to be learnt from a teacher at first hand. If you hold a black belt in any martial art, you have an unavoidable duty to pass the skills you learned from your teacher on to the next generation." Depending on the state you operate in those instructors could be considered an uncompensated employees, which may or may not be legal in your state. According to Scot A. Conway Esq., in an article from the ACMA Instructor Certification Manual there was a case in California where a school had been doing that for years until there was a disagreement between the Chief Instructor and a student black belt instructor. The student instructor went to the California Labor Board. The state investigated and found that over the years the school had 25 such uncompensated instructors. In California that's illegal. The school was fined $1,000 per incident. $25,000! I don't know how many states have similar laws. I don't even know if my state (Florida) does. We are a new school though and I'm the only instructor, but when I get there I'm thinking it might be better to charge the black belt members and pay those who instruct. The black belts would be in charge of a group of students and make sure they are learning what the senior instructor has put out. Essentially they are working off their debt. -- Martin Von Cannon Instructor Tacoma, WA. Dojang A Black Belt is more than something you wear. It's more than something you earn.
