West, who I just hosted for a seminar in Dallas. As always, he's a fount of information and everyone learned a great deal and had a lot of fun. Having now hosted Dojunim Han Jae JI, Master West, and Master Booth; I can say that each is a true master. Each has a different interpretation of Hapkido but all are supremely skilled and you can not go wrong training with any of them. I talked to Dojunim this morning and rescheduled hosting him next in Dallas to June 11-12 from April 9-10. My hope is this will give more people planning on going to Master Allison's seminar with DJN April 2nd and Master Thomas's seminar with Master West April 23 the chance to come to Dallas as well. (And it gives me a better chance of doing one or the other or both, too! My wife and 5 year old daughter are a little jealous of my time...between working a full time job, teaching Hapkido 3/week, teaching occasional arnis and TKD classes, and taking classes at UTD, I can't travel much and have to space out the seminars...) Abdallah, a third-degree black belt who also won a bronze medal at the 2003 Pan American Games, will conduct three one-hour clinics for Iowa taekwondo students: one for students ages 11 and under, one for students ages 12 to 18, and one youth black belts and adults. Each session begins at 5:30 p.m., and will be held at the Holiday Inn - Airport, 6111 Fleur Drive, in Des Moines. Abdallah's clinics will be in conjunction with the 11th Annual Two Rivers Invitational Taekwondo Tournament set for Jan. 29 at Hoyt Middle School, 2700 East 42nd Street, Des Moines. The tournament is for beginners and is only open to students who've competed in two tournaments or less, and is sponsored/hosted by Voorhees Taekwondo, Inc., of Des Moines. Abdallah will be available ahead of time for any reporters who would like to schedule an interview. Reporters will also be welcome to attend any of the seminars. Contact Jeneane Beck at 515-971-2563. More on Nia Abdallah: The 21 year old hails from Houston, Texas. Her Olympic dream began at the age of five, watching the Olympic gymnastic competition on television. At the age of nine, she began taekwondo. Abdallah has won 14 Texas State Championships (forms and sparring), four Junior Olympic gold medals (forms and sparring) and numerous local and regional tournaments. She earned her first major international win in 1997 at the 11th Annual U.S. Cup Taekwondo Championships where she captured a gold medal in breaking. Abdallah has also won international events in Peru and Canada, as well as two senior National Championships. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2005 12:14:01 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] USA TKD 2005 events Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net USA Taekwondo 2005 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS U.S. Open March 3-6, 2005 Atlanta, GA National Qualifier March 19-20, 2005 San Jose, CA National Qualifier April 9-10, 2005 Providence, RI National Qualifier April 23-24, 2005 Houston, TX National Qualifier May 7-8, 2005 Anaheim, CA National Qualifier May 14-15, 2005 Ft. Over the past two weeks, Jan. 11-27, some Fairfax County school children got a chance to see what tae kwon do is really like, up close and personal, when 16 young athletes from South Korea's national children's tae kwon do demonstration team visited gymnasiums at four area schools. Team members, the youngest of which was 7 and the oldest 19, were brought to Northern Virginia through a cultural exchange program initiated in part through the efforts of The World Class Tigereye TaeKwonDo Inc.--a martial arts academy in Fairfax. Before coming to the United States, Tigereye master instructor Han J. Do was once a member and coach on the same South Korean demonstration team. "In tae kwon do, we learn to focus the mind and the body," said Do, speaking Tuesday morning, Jan. 25, to a packed gymnasium filled with extremely attentive students at Little Run Elementary School on Olley Lane in Fairfax. "We learn how to show respect to parents, teachers, friends, neighbors and for our neighborhoods," he said prior to introducing the Koreans. Following the introduction and for the next hour or so, the tae kwon do athletes, all dressed in white martial arts uniforms with black and red trim and the letters "KOREA" written on their backs, proceeded to jump, punch and kick in the air and then break in half thin blocks of wood with their bare hands and feet. "I think you can see from their faces just how excited they are," said Little Run Principal Janet Johnson describing her students during the event. The majority of ESOL (English as a Second Language) students at Little Run, she said, speak either Spanish or Korean as a first language. "We try to bring cultural events to the school that represent our diverse student population," said Johnson, a Fairfax Station resident who has been the head administrator at Little Run for the past nine years. Also at the martial arts demonstration Tuesday was Fairfax County School Board member at large Ilryong Moon. "Obviously, in this global society in which we live, it's good for our kids to be exposed to many different cultures," said Moon before the start of the event. "For many of the Korean students, this is their first visit to the United States," he said. "When they go back to Korea, they can tell others what America is really like." Annandale resident and Tigereye martial arts student Charles Banning said he along with other families of Tigereye students played host to the Korean athletes at their homes. In addition to Little Run, the Koreans also performed demonstrations at Merritt Academy in Fairfax, as well as at Mantua and Camelot elementary schools, he said. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
