It is a somewhat frequent thread over on our sister list, the Eskrima Digest. (http://eskrima-fma.net) Eskrima is a weapons based Filipino martial art. Music or rhythms play an important part in the FMAs. Many schools will have a rhythm machine and/or some drums over in one corner. A rhythm with a strong beat is frequently playing in the background to help the students 'feel' the rhythm in their footwork and in their stick or blade drills. FWIW... Kunkel spoke to the attentive group about her road to making the 2000 Olympic Team and the myriad of sacrifices involved along the way, which brought some of the mothers on the sidelines to tears. She stressed to the girls the "Four D's" needed to be successful not only in sports, but in life: Desire, Discipline, Determination and Dedication. Kunkel then led the group in a rousing series of punching and kicking drills that got hearts racing and made the noise level in the gym noticeably higher. The girls definitely came away from the experience with a new self-confidence and an appreciation and understanding for the sport of Taekwondo. National Girls & Women in Sports Day was established by a Congressional resolution in 1986 to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in sports. The first NGWSD was organized to remember and honor 1984 Olympic volleyball silver medalist Flo Hyman, who died of Marfan's Syndrome during a volleyball game in 1986. The national celebration, recognized in all 50 states with community-based events, awards and other activities, calls attention to the positive influence of sports and fitness participation and to advances in the struggle for equality and access for women in sports. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Denise" To: Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2005 22:41:59 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: 10 cents on music my 2 cents are free Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Master Cox- I appreciate and share your seriousness of purpose, but must share that one of the most pleasant demonstrations I ever witnessed was Grandmaster HC Hwang and the 2 Masters Hong demonstrating sections of the Chil Sung Hyungs (possibly Hwa Sun and some Yuk Rho hyungs as well -- it was a long time ago) on stage with music and a fog machine. No, it was not a class, but they probably practiced that somewhere beforehand? My own penny . . . Denise >Music in the class does not fit into the military structure. It seems commercializing, and club like. Although it may seem to help some become motivated and others may enjoy that type of exercise. It is not IMHO Moo Do.
