Any idea which IHF group > this club belongs to? It is the International H.K.D Federation founded by the late Myung Jae Nam. I should know, because I am the one who started the gym in De Pijp :-) Now that I have settled in Korea for some time, a student of mine has taken over. Of course I recommend the school there in Amsterdam :-) The people training there are a nice bunch of people, and some of them with an international background. So if you don't speak Dutch, that is not a problem. There are several others who don't, and they get their directions in English. The NHF (Netherlands (=Dutch) H.K.D Federation) is a federation with only six schools. All the school leaders and most of the students know eachother and have their noses pointing in the same direction. The connection with Korea is maintained through Sang Moo Kwan in Korea. With Master Ko Baek Yong (9th dan) being the technical advisor of the NHF. If you have any questions feel free to contact me by email. I will gladly get you in touch with the current instructor. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 05:10:52 -0800 (PST) From: Charles Richards To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Feel the love Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I read Pretty decent for a good ole North Georgia Mountain Boy. Congrats! MC Reply I feel the love all the way from Cali, but will miss you in Jackson. And to answer an old post, yes I have jumped to the "dark side" (TKD) as far as sparring I'm focussing on the WTF style right now for the conditioning benefits and mental discipline required. But I've always been on the dark side as I started in JRI :-) MC --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 08:41:01 -0800 (PST) From: Bruce Sims To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Highlight reel Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Folks I must confess in all honesty that the clip I viewed of Royce Gracie was the first that I had ever viewed. I think I also understand now why there is so much trouble reconciling BJJ and Hapkido in these discussions. Apparently the eyes, ears, mouth, throat and groin are off limits. Apparently folks do not use debilitating force in their strikes and kicks. Apparently working joints such as the fingers against their limits is off limits. I understand the legacy and history of BJJ but I must confess that if I happened upon the same scuffle on the street I would have seen nothing to indicate that either of the folks in the clip was utilizing what I have come to identify as "martial arts" to accomplish their goals. I don't mean for this to sound disparaging to BJJ only that I can understand now why the discussions about using Hapkido in full contact or BJJ is fraught with so many problems. As I may have suspected from the start we are comparing apples and oranges. FWIW. It's a softer style of Hapkido, which is influenced by Japanese Aikido. William French Anderson, 68, was released shortly after 5 a.m. on bond, according to the county Sheriff's Department Web site. No other information was immediately released. Anderson is accused of molesting a girl he instructed in martial arts between 1997 and 2001. He has pleaded not guilty to a count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under age 14 and five counts of committing a lewd act upon a child in that case. Anderson was arrested last week on new charges that he molested a boy, who was then 12, at his home in Bethesda, Md., from 1983 to 1985. A spokesman for the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland has said Anderson met the boy at a martial arts studio in Cloverly, Md., where he had worked as an assistant instructor, and took the boy to his house to tutor him. The four counts in Maryland include custodial abuse, second-degree sex offense, third-degree sex offense and perverted practice. Authorities do not know how many times the boy, now in his early 30s, was allegedly molested. Anderson, who has a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do, has been placed on administrative leave as director of the Gene Therapies Laboratories at USC's Keck School of Medicine. Considered the "father of gene therapy," Anderson has published hundreds of articles in scholarly journals and won numerous awards for his work. He was Time magazine's runner-up for Man of the Year in 1995. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Highlight reel To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 15:08:09 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I must confess in all honesty that the clip I viewed > of Royce Gracie was the first that I had ever viewed. > I think I also understand now why there is so much > trouble reconciling BJJ and Hapkido in these > discussions. > > Apparently the eyes, ears, mouth, throat and groin are > off limits. I can't view the video file, but I suspect you're seeing Royce in a sport match. For the 'sport' of it, certain things are usually off limits (eyes, fish hooks, finger breaks). They are probably wearing cups, so the groin is less of an effective target. Throat and ears should be open. Looking at their ears one clearly sees an indication of a fair amount of abuse, typical of grapplers. > Apparently folks do not use debilitating force in > their strikes and kicks. > > Apparently working joints such as the fingers against > their limits is off limits. Joint locks (wrist, elbow, ankle, knee to the lesser degree)are very frequently used, just not fingers. Don't know about toes. :) What one frequently sees with Royce is a weak side kick used to set up a takedown. From there he works to/from the mount or the guard to submit the opponent, frequently taking a fair amount of damage until 'finding' the submission. > I understand the legacy and history of BJJ but I must > confess that if I happened upon the same scuffle on > the street I would have seen nothing to indicate that > either of the folks in the clip was utilizing what I > have come to identify as "martial arts" to accomplish > their goals. As I may have > suspected from the start we are comparing apples and > oranges. FWIW. The MMA/BJJ/GJJ we see in sport matches is martial sport. They keep adding rules and limitations to the sport matches so that they stay legal in the US (and other countries?). The have to be careful as Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and others have looked into banning UFC / MMA-type matches in the US.
