This is not directed personally at Bruce so take this as a blanket statement from someone who has wrestled, done submission grappling, done judo, and teaches Hapkido. If you don't practice your "deadly" techniques at mach speed with power and all the disadvantages of terain and clothing against a person who is bent on slamming the back of your head on the ground and wrapping you up like a cheap christmas present then you really have no idea of what works and what does not work. I hear this stuff a lot from people who "think" they can automatically disable someone... try it.. put on some protective devices and go at it and see what bubbles burst...first your eyes will be open to what is real..now once this happens,,and it will,, don't make excuses or say I wasn't using my "deadliest" techniques...just become a mad scientist and fix the problem... position is first and foremost and then technique..you will learn this...also..it is much harder to gouge someones eye out or crush their groin.. I did see someones eye get crushed once in a real fight but it came from a sucker punch,, once the guy hit the ground my buddy Albert kicked him in the face with the toe of his shoe and by accident the toe point of his shoe went right into the guys eye socket and crushed his eyeball.. it wasn't a pretty sight and something I don't want to see again but that's the way it goes sometimes.... I'm sure we'll have LOTS of responses on this one, but let me just respond, because I also am a person who does not think a lot of Brazilian jujutsu. Keep that in mind as you read this, ok? - The Gracies specialize in one-on-one grappling for exhibition, so they don't practice gouging eyes (that I know of), just as judoka and wrestlers don't work on such things. That is not to say they can't do it. - Oh yeah, they use force. But historically wrestlers have defeated boxers and strikers because you can eat a couple hard hits to get close, and then the striker often doesn't know how to wrestle. A lot of Royce's blows seemed designed more to disorient his opponent, throw him off balance, and then get him to a position where Royce could hurt him at will. - It is not terribly hard to avoid getting one's finger broken. More than that, I learned from teaching the local football team that most of them had broken all their fingers from one time to another, and that it didn't stop them from playing. Ray wrote: >I can't view the video file, but I suspect you're seeing Royce in a sport match. Nope. Apparently some kung-fu guy challenged Royce, so instead of going for a quick finish (Royce got to his rear choke position pretty quickly), Royce let it continue so he could elbow the guy in the back a bit (something that the kung-fu guy did to him earlier). >What one frequently sees with Royce is a weak side kick used to set up a takedown. From there he works to/from the mount or the guard to submit the opponent, frequently taking a fair amount of damage until 'finding' the submission. Exactly! So, even if I don't think Brazilian jujutsu is the be-all and end-all, it certainly teaches some useful ways of thinking about grappling. If you don't understand how the other guy is fighting, you are probably going to be in trouble. Ignorance ain't bliss! Rorion is narrating. It appears that Royce is toying with the guy. He has a couple of chances for a RNC and actually gets the guy in a triangle choke and chooses not to submit him. He rolls him and beats on his face a lot while keeping the choke. And yes a week kick set up a double leg takedown. Not a fight, just a friendly little roll. You may be surprised at what conclusions you come to from actual experience as opposed to watching 12-year old challenge match footage from the comfort of your chair. This was a famous challenge match that took place back in the early 90's. Royce would face DeLucia again in UFC 2, and this was where he did the famous "upside down" armbar. I'm actually a bit surprised that Royce had that much "trouble" against him in the challenge match, but it was a beautiful performance nonetheless and he was never in a bad position. <<>> And what people don't realize is that someone like Royce Gracie isn't going to roll over and start crying even if you did twist one of his iddy-biddy fingers. Then again, it's hard to do ANYTHING with a guy on your back who's taking turns working for the choke and banging you upside the head. Disclaimer: I am not a Royce Gracie fan boy.
