I am sure to the participants they are interesting, but there is a point at which any poster should be able to see that the majority of people do not need to read a post. I enjoy the vast majority of posts on the DD, but I must confess to beginning to get fed up of spending time deleting posts that have no relevance to me, or to the reasons I signed up to this group. I just don't care to roll around on the ground. But, hopefully, it's not going to be a BJJ guy, or any other martial artist gone bad, that will attack me. It's more likely to be an ice freak or one of the Hawaiians who still believes in "Kill a Haole" day here in my part of town. I also like to train in styles where you suffer the least amount of injuries during training. From what I understand, BJJ takes a toll on your body. One of my early 20 year old nephews has had his elbow messed up for life and his ulnar nerve transplanted around to the inside of his elbow...all in training in nut riding! Nowadays, I just train in the basics and luckily have a teacher who insists on it. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 1 Mar 2005 15:26:48 -0800 (PST) From: Jye nigma Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Martial Art To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I think what people are really and truly over looking is the fact that it is not the srt or system in which one trains, it is the way that individual can use their system. Just that simple!!! For instance, take 5 guys, send them to mechanic school, let's say they all receive their certifications ase or whtever it's called. Now, just because they all have that cert doesn't mean tht they'll all be any good. Right? How many of us have gone to mechanics who have all the tools but suck at what they do? The same is true of martial arts. Even if you put a student in a mcdojo where the techer is wack there is still a possibility that a student can evolve into quite a formidable opponent based on their implimentation of what they have learned. It depends on the student how they interpret what they have learned and how they can use it. that's the bottom line. A great example is american idol...you heard the judges say all the time, ...I liked how you took the song nd made it yours...meaning how they took someone else's song and sang it as if they wrote it themselves. So you apply that to the martial arts and the individual who can take the martial art and "make it theirs" is going to be quite successful in using it no matter the style. Jye Brian Locke wrote: Well, since every one and their brother has chimed in on this "Which Martial Art is the best" subject, I guess I will throw my hat in the ring. I have been reading the posts on how BJJ appears to be a legitimate style in 'real world' defense because most street fights end up on the ground. I must say I have ended up on the ground a few times, both as the giver and the receiver of punishment. But the thing I seem to have missed in all these posts are thoughts on 'spirit'. By 'spirit' I mean will to win/survive. I have been in a situation where I was scared to death and had a much larger and stronger opponent/attacker trying to hurt me. But this person did not fear for his life. I DID. And because of this I was able to subdue this man. I guess what I am trying to say is that the martial art you train in, and train diligently in, can be just as affective as any other when combined with that true fighting 'spirit'. I really feel it is as simple as that. Two opponents of equal strength and skill face off against each other..who will win? The one who wants it more. I apologize if some one else has already touched on this subject and I missed it.
