Although I seldom discuss it, I quit teaching taekwondo around 1999. Personally, everywhere I looked, when we first moved out of Texas, I would see hapkido taught, but not the whole art. It was taught as a supplemental art. Sadly, it was also common to hear that someone who would never accept rank in their chosen art that they did not earned, take rank freely in another martial art. For some reason, hapkido was becoming the ‘art’ to claim rank in. When I started in hapkido, no one knew what it was. Now it is common for high dan in taekwondo to be offered rank in hapkido without ever training in it or just by attending a workshop or two. I now devote my entire teaching time to promoting and teaching hapkido as a complete self-defense martial art, without leaving any parts behind. I know several outstanding taekwondo and tangsoodo instructors that teach their art as a complete self-defense form and spend their time outside of class attending seminars and have nothing to do with the sport arena anymore. They are outstanding at what they do and teach it as a complete self-defense martial art. Every few years some new art comes along by changes the terminology or teaching only a part of the original art. It is not always a bad thing, look at judo. But, in these days of a new art or ‘style’ popping up every few weeks it is refreshing to see someone stick to his or her original art and not ‘need’ to change it. After all, if we don’t pass on the complete art, who will? Jere R. What a beautiful statement Master Hilland. I have been teaching TKD since 1985, and have always taught is as a method of training from head to toe, from inside and out. Sport is just one small piece of the whole. Sadly, many don't know that they are getting only a small portion of the whole. I, too, have seen many TKD folks who claim to teach HKD, while only teaching TKD with some locks or sweeps without an understanding of the philosophy, mechanics and history involved. Having studied (as in put on a white belt) Aikido, Kempo and HKD over the years while always practicing TKD, it was easy to tell the difference. Unfortunately for many it is not. There are still many of us who teach TKD as a complete art, with the mentality that goes with what it takes to do what is necessary, not just score some points. Sport focus isn't bad, just incomplete. It is what it is, and sadly for some, it's all that it is. Anyway, just some random thoughts after an excellent post. See everyone in a few days in Jackson.
