My name is John and I will be moving to South Korea in about a week to teach English for a year or so. I am definitely interested in taking a Korean Martial Art while I am there, for various reasons. I am not familiar with any martial art form(s), with the exception of Kenpo and Jiu Jitsu. However, I am looking to participate in a martial art that includes alot of grappling techniques and/or hand-to-hand fighting. Any information will help. One taught taekwondo and hapkido equally and separately and the other was an exclusive (one) art dojang. It was common then in the hard to find, mixed arts dojang that the same teacher did not teach both. That was also true in the Japanese arts. I remember the older Korean's back in the 70's and even the 80's, did not like the idea of two arts being taught in a dojang. "Not good" was a phrase I heard often along with "the well will not be deep enough". Now every time I travel and look in the yellow pages, every other teacher 'teaches' many arts. We have a dojang over on the Minnesota side of Fargo that claims to teach 3 arts, but when I visited the dojang, he was really only about taekwondo. For some strange reason he promotes himself as a triple grandmaster (not even sure what the modern American term 'grandmaster' is all about) as he ads up his dan ranks and claims that rank. That is good for a laugh. I had a new student start last week whose bother-in-law is a taekwondo instructor at the dojang, but also holds a hapkido chodan as he once attended a hapkido seminar. Of course, my BS alarm went off. Theses stories can go on forever. Hapkido is not an easy art to learn and to learn the whole art and gain proficiency in it, takes a very long time. When Master West was a 3rd dan in 1973 he opened his current hapkido dojang. The local Korean martial arts community said it would not last, he should teach something else also. Those other dojang have come and gone over the years and he has expanded the dojang to 5,250 sq feet over the years. I have seen the same taekwondoin go to Jackson year after year to study hapkido. They don't claim rank in the art, they just ad to their vocabulary of techniques and develop an appreciation for a different art. Jere R. Selvam Mar 10 TAEKWONDO clubs will not be given voting rights. Instead, the Malaysian Taekwondo Association (MTA) have decided that the status quo of all clubs will remain, which means they will be affiliated to the national body but without voting rights. The decision was made at the Extraordinary General Council (EGC) meeting in Wisma OCM yesterday, but MTA chairman Chin Mee Keong emphasised that the decision to deny clubs voting rights was not a permanent one. "The EGC decided that all clubs' status quo will remain. "This means they will be affiliated to the MTA but with no voting rights," said Mee Keong yesterday. "However, since the Sports Commissioner's office have directed all clubs to be registered with them, and not the ROB (Registrar of Business), we cannot use the term associate members any longer. "Associate members (clubs) will now be known as Registered Taekwondo Centres (RTC)." The decision effectively means that the MTA have gone against the directive of Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said who instructed the association to amend their constitution to grant clubs voting rights. But Mee Keong gave his reason. "Since none of the clubs are registered with the Sports Commissioner's office, we were advised by representatives from the OCM (Olympic Council of Malaysia) and Sports Commissioner's office not to give clubs voting rights," said Mee Keong. "When there are clubs registered with the Sports Commissioner's office and once they apply to us (MTA) for voting rights, we will consider their request. "When there are clubs who want to come in, then it should be opened up (apply for voting rights). "This was the advice given by the OCM and Sports Commissioner's office." And if there is any danger of the MTA running foul of Azalina's directive, Mee Keong said: "OCM said they would appeal to Tan Sri Elyas Omar (Sports Commissioner) to review the Sports Development Act first. "It was pointed out that once they can get the Act right, only then should national associations be asked to follow it (Act)." --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 9 Mar 2005 18:50:40 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] Korean colonial photography Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Forwarding from the korean-studies list... While we're on the subject of photos from around the turn of the century, I want to take the opportunity to introduce a fine collection of such, Norm Thorpe, whom most on this list will know, helped compile the stereograph photos that Australian George Rose took in 1904. Norm also wrote the Introduction and the informative extensive notes for each photo. The photos, because they were taken with a stereoscope, are very clear. The very high quality of the book makes one imagine that no expense was spared in producing the book.
