Really looking forward to it. Mac --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Teaching the art... Did Ji Han Ja gets > Choi's blessing to add/change Choi's art? Unclear, but I doubt it. Gm Choi taught Hapkiyusul. Gm Ji (it is JI Han Jae, btw) added kicks (not the same karate/taekwondo kicks one sees today in the Hapkido taught in Korea), cane, meditation, etc. In all honesty the stories will vary, but many indicate that Choi did not begin to use the name Hapkido until that name had become highly popularized by Ji. Because of Gm Ji's connection to the Blue House, Hapkido became popular which then brought more students and much more $$ to Gm Choi, which I'm sure he was very happy about. > Is adding techniques (such as more/different kicks, > Philipino knife defenses, Jujitsu ground techniqes, > whatever, etc) more acceptable to ones peers teaching > the original/traditional art? Obviously those peers > wouldn't like to see anything left out of the original > curriculum but what about adding something in? Ji Han > Ja must have thought the original system needed > something, so he added something. Many have stated that Gm Ji's Hapkido is the first eclectic martial art. He obtained a base in a great art (Yawara, Hapkiyusul, Daito-ryu AikiJuJutsu, whatever you want to call it) and added to it giving us the art that many today recognize as Hapkido. Go down to GA and check out the seminar James is hosting w/Gm Ji. Gm Ji will freely tell you as he teaches what he learned from Gm Choi and what he added later.
