I had several attending for the first time, and they were already talking about planning on attending again. You're right, it is fun not only teaching, but I also enjoy being a student again too. We were sure looking forward to Grandmaster Timmerman's class – even brought our bokens. Sorry you couldn't be there Rudy. Stuff happens… Congrats to some of the list members (and good friends) on their promotions – Master Jere Hilland's promotion to 6th Dan! And Mr. Jeffery Dean Sr. for his promotion to 1st Dan. Very well deserved recognitions. Thanks again Master West for hosting such a successful event! One of my daughter's students commented on how impressed he was with the diversity of martial artist that showed up from all over the US (and of course our friends from Canada). Every one he met was from a different state and city. He was asking me when the next seminar was going to he held and if I was going. (of course I'll be going) It's always nice seeing old friends and meeting new ones, not to mention being able to put names with faces of those whom we've already gotten to know here on the DD. I wonder why a style can't have elegance, grace, form and also be effective? Sid --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 07:29:51 -0500 From: Tkdsid@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Jim's comments on central authority Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Jim, I appreciate the time you took to respond to my posting and appreciate the issues you bring forth. My contention here is this. Whether or not one is in favor of a central authority we are moving well in the right direction. The University of Bridgeport and Radford College are but two schools now offering college degrees in martial arts. This will do wonders for setting standards. By the way...in no way, shape or form will that affect fees in dojongs. There have been two states that have proposed regulation and narrowly been defeated. Eventually that will succeed. When we look at the debacle of the USTU, how can anyone think we can go along in this fashion. Better government oversight in korea may have stopped Un Yong Kim from pilfering the kukkiwon. As to who would sit on regulatory boards...that's a political process. Term limits would decide how long anyone can get their clutches on things. As to whether its my busines what another school does? It damn well is my business! Do we practice martial arts or Sissy Mary's Dance Studio? I don't advocate hands off. We have demonstrated by our greed, selfishness and pride how badly we can destroy the arts. Its time to clean things up, tighten standards and create atheletes with all the ancient virtues. I think we can do this at least as well as we have regulated massage therapy. He teaches only one "Do" ( one "Way" ). The "Ya" means to augment or add to ( if my memory of the translation is correct ). I might comment that by augmenting your studies you Are recognizing your Art of Soo Bahk Do perhaps even more completely. Also, if you are Able to earn rank in two arts, why wouldn't you? Providing your Teacher approves, it should only help you grow. No to mention that any gentleman or lady who earns rank in a second while remaining true to themselves is one bad character in the ring, mat, or street. Certainly a practitioner worthy of respect. Brian Message: 1 From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" To: "the_dojang" Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2005 08:44:48 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Reality Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sid I agree with you here on most every idea. I train in So Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan which is a true art. The word art does not always mean effective. I believe there are many styles that fit into the word true art, but are not always effective. Soo Bahk Do is a very effective style but lacks good ground application. Jujitsu is an effective style but lacks good stand up application. Being effective does not make a style an art. Art must embody history, tradition, philosophy, discipline, respect, and technique. I do agree that most people claiming to have degrees in multiple styles are a fraud. I train in So Bahk Do consistently and live by the principles of the Moo Duk Kwan organization and practice the physical art of Soo Bahk Do. I do however cross trian in Jujitsu. I do not practice the Japanese/Brazilian philosophies that are associated with the techniques. I simply added the techniques of Jujitsu to my personal practice to increase my ability to be effective, I have trained in jujitsu for 15 years but do not claim any rank. To be a 5th dan in both styles I would have to practice the complete art. This would mean living by two sets of principles. Just my two cents JC --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 08:42:44 -0500 From: "Burdick, Dakin Robert" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Jackson Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sorry we missed everyone on Sunday. Jim & I drove back to Indiana in the morning since the sessions on Sunday were mostly repeats of what we had already done. Kudos to JR for putting on the weekend! We had a lot of fun working out with folks from other styles, and meeting Dojang_Digest people we had talked to for a long time but never met face to face. I was really sorry Rudy couldn't make it, but Tim and I did get to swap some GM Pak stories on Saturday night. Thanks also to Tim's wife for letting us do that!! By the way, I love the way the classes are set up, with 3 sessions in different rooms -- it let us move around and try new things all the time. The only downside was those buffets -- I'm going to have to do some extra rowing machine this week to drop those pounds again! :) Take care, Dakin --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 06:24:33 -0800 (PST) From: Lloyd Martin To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Jackson Seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just wanted to thank Master West and all those that made the spring seminar another great success. I spent years teaching full time at a very high profile and VERY expensive place. The rent/utilities/advertising ran several grand a month. I spent more time on the business side than I did on the mat side. I was in the dojang 12 hours a day. Someday, I am sure I will do it again, maybe a little better next time and not in such a high rent city. It was a great learning experience. Now I sub-lease 3 nights a week from a local taekwondo school. I brought in everything from office furniture, visitors chairs, benches, mirrors, mats, weapons, pads, etc. as I had them. We are completely independent from them as a traditional hapkido dojang, Red River Hapkido LLC, and the folks that run that place are great to work with. <<>> I look at this several ways. First, such arts as taekwondo change constantly, although it is mostly on the sport side and that is such a very small part of the art. Hapkido doesn't really change, the techniques have been around a LONG time and there is nothing to prove, our goal is to get them done correctly. This takes a lot of time in rank (i.e.: mat time). I teach the sword part of hapkido for a historical perspective. After all, if we don't teach the whole art for the next generation of teachers, who will? Look at how many years it take to produce great hard falls in hapkido! The more I learn about hapkido the more I realize I don't know. On a side note, the DD is an academic exercise and my old friend that runs the DD does an outstanding job! I often enjoy playing devil’s advocate on issues for the sake of discussion. I have said this every few years. I have taken some hits because of this on the DD from folks new to the forum. I take things off the mats with a grain of salt and never personally, after all it is all about my technique and time on the mats. Not what a piece of paper says. And I am always happy to get on the mats with anyone. My central authority is my teacher, not any organization or anyone else. On yet another side not, for you history enthusiast, this may be of interest: http://ahfaa.org/bruteforce.htm. Jere R. Are they talking about punching during kyeorugi? This would certainly change the nature of TKD competition that I've seen. Additional info? Comments? MC Reply First it has always been a legal scoring technique as defined by the written rules. Most people use the cover punch as a stop hit, and use punches to make a clincher back off (into kick range), but there is talk about possible 3 point differential scoring (like USSSA continuous point) with 3 for head kicks, 2 for body kicks and 1 for hands. I think that all falls into the more scoring is more exciting for spectators catagory, so you might see IR's starting to acknowledge hand scores more in the future if there's any truth to that discussion.
