The U.S. team will be comprised of 16 athletes (eight male and eight female) as well as four support staff which includes a team leader and coaches yet to be determined. "The World University Games are an important program in the development of our athletes," said USA Taekwondo CEO Bob Gambardella. "The funding of a team to compete at this event is consistent with our athlete-centered model of operation." The Collegiate Team Trials, to be held May 14 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., will determine the World University Games team. Athletes must qualify for the Trials through the National Collegiate Championships to be held April 15-16 at the University of California-Berkeley. The Championships are run by the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association. Eligible athletes on the 2005 World Championship Team competing in Madrid, Spain, April 13-17, will also automatically qualify for the Collegiate Team Trials in Ft. Lauderdale. "It's great that USA Taekwondo is supporting the athletes who will be attending the 2005 Summer Universiade," stated Rex Hatfield, secretary general of the NCTA. "This achievement has been a goal of the NCTA for many years and has created an incredible opportunity for collegiate competitors. These student athletes will be able to focus on their training and their academic work without having to be concerned with fundraising for the Summer World University Games." In addition to Taekwondo, the U.S. will compete in the sports of archery, men's and women's basketball, diving, fencing, sailing, swimming, tennis, men's volleyball, men's water polo and men's wrestling. "This is a great and exciting opportunity for the athletes and USA Taekwondo's athlete development process," said USA Taekwondo High Performance Director Scott Novack. "By incorporating the USA National Collegiate Team that competes in the World University Games, this provides a smooth transition from the Junior National Team through the Senior National Team." Taekwondo athletes brought home six medals at the 2003 World University Games in Daegu, South Korea. Daniel Elkowitz won gold in the men's finweight division, Darcy Kimmich captured silver in the women's lightweight class, and bronze medals were awarded to men's featherweight Ruford Hamon, women's finweight Amanda Thome, women's bantamweight Rebecca Peterson and women's featherweight Stephanie Beckel. "We now have the opportunity to fully integrate the same processes, team culture and philosophies from the Junior National Team to the Collegiate National Team and the Senior National Team," Novack added. "This is an opportunity that complements our athlete-centered model and assists USA Taekwondo in sustaining competitive excellence. I am really looking forward to what this will bring." Competition dates for Taekwondo are August 15-19. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Lorne Keatley" To: Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 20:16:56 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Jackson Mutants Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi all, It seems that the Jackson seminar was a big hit again. Congrats to Master West on running a great seminar experience each time. It would have been really nice to be able to attend, but it's nice to be missed as well. It would be great to get down and work with some of my Southern friends again. Just not sure if I can handle all that gravy is all. I just heard a rumor that the MDK was considering suing anyone using them. Did anyone else hear this? I understand not using the MDK name on do boks outside SBD but this seemed a bit over the top to me. Any info, thoughts, input, much appreciated. Don't know about legal action re doboks, seems silly to me but then $$ make people (and corporations) do silly things. The status as of 1/13/05 of the Moo Duk Kwan trademark / wordmark application (filed on 4/19/04) is available at the US Patent and Trademark Office search website. Looks like it is still under consideration. http://tess2.uspto.gov Hopefully someone is telling GM JJ Kim about all this. The appl states that Moo Duk Kwan was first used in the US in 1974 (if I read this correctly). I'm certain that Kim and/or others were using Moo Duk Kwan in the US well prior to 1974. I can see protecting SBD MDK, but MDK is now bigger than just SBD MDK. It's a long trip from West-ByGod-Virginia, but worth every mile. It was my fourth trip to Master West's throwdown and it gets better every time. We met some wonderful and very knowledgable folks and we look forward to working with them all again. It was mentioned that a group picture of everyone who subscribes to the DD would be taken. Did I and my students miss it?? I don't recall any announcement about it later during the seminar... Thanks. You got burned by the same group I did. Plain and simple. That does not make everyone a crook. When you start inviting government into all aspects of your life, you ask for trouble. What WE need to do is to teach by example. Government regulation will only impact those who choose to follow the law. Those who are dishonest will not be affected.
