I am not a dan grade or anything like that. I am however, interested in the fact that some people belive that the motivation to practice an art comes from an external source. Look at the 5 precepts of Taekwondo. Perserverance, Indomnible spirit e.t.c. The fact that a woman is afraid of falling is not an issue. The fact a practitioner is afraid of falling is the issue. I find that some dojangs are dominated by male presence. Lets not allow this to colour our perceptions of what a woman can do. And lets not get into any arguments about differences in training men and women Richard Laws Durham, England [demime 0.98e removed an attachment of type application/ms-tnef which had a name of winmail.dat] --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Bob Banham" To: Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2005 15:05:52 -0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] The true enemy Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was thinking about Sun Tzu's oft quoted words "Know your enemy and know yourself and in one hundred battles you will never be defeated" and about its relevance to the question of 'the true nature of martial arts'. It seems we have lost sight of or maybe have never had sight of, the true enemy. Now I am not nor have I ever been an LEO or serviceman but I have travelled the world, been in war zones, lived in 3rd world countries, worked as a doorman, bodyguard, security guard etc. and had firearms pointed at me and been arrested and locked up (again in a 3rd world country). And I have never had to fight except by choice. It seems to me that if you are a member of the law enforcement or security forces you are told who your enemy is anyway, you don't always have to identify him yourself. It is surely more advantageous to treat everyone as a potential friend whilst remaining aware of other possibilities. Next week, my wife Nikki and one of my senior black belts are accompanying Dr Kimm on a trip to China and North Korea. Most of the senior American Hanmudo black belts (and some European ones) don't want to go. Why? Because they truly believe that N. Korea is 'The Axis of Evil' as they have been told! Dr. Kimm, having been there 4 times now says that N. Korea is one of the most beautiful countries he has ever visited and the people are amongst the most humble and honest people in the world! And he is a South Korean! It also has a deep martial culture, which has had an immeasurable influence on those arts we all love and try to practice. I would be going myself except for the fact that I have multiple sclerosis and hiking in mountainous terrain is not something I find easy or enjoyable these days! So it seems to me that the true nature of martial arts is not necessarily learning how to fight only. It is also about learning how to 'not fight' and about learning to recognize that the majority of situations when we could fight are entirely dependant upon our ability to recognise another way. There are many ways to resolve a dilemma or challenge. We can discuss, we can compromise and we can retreat. Sun Tzu (and the Hwarang) recognized these alternatives and that is the true nature of martial arts. Ray quite rightly says that we have an imperfect and incomplete understanding of exactly how martial arts were taught and exactly what the underlying philosophies were. But if we have an idea or even an inkling that there was a higher motive other than self protection, surely we have a responsibility, even an obligation, to include that in our own endeavours. Feel free to come out to the Hill Country for a great time of fun, learning and sharing. Austin is an extremely attractive venue for those of you who have non-training significant others, there are a lot of scenic, historic and fun things to do including live music and 6th Street. You could color it as a mini-vacation (one you'll be sore after).> Response: I agree Master West provides a great seminar. Since your an hour from me, can you recommend schools in the San Antonio area that teach Hapkido. Not interested in TKD. My wife, for example has a bad back, but still loves to fall. If you treat her differently due to gender, she will toss you into the wall and tell you not to do it again. Women on the other hand, can relax easier than men and I have seen more guys than gals hurt during falls, all things being equal. I have a lot of female hapkido students, and I don't have to worry about them jerking their movement when they start and hurting someone as I do with the young college student age guys. 2) Martial Improvement: I still teach hapkido to the military and police, so the martial side is still alive and well. So hapkido has not really changed all that much for me. Guess these days, it is all in the method of the instructor. That sounds familiar.... 3) For Ken: Just returned to the Snowbelt after visiting family back home in Texas. Sorry Ken, but to use the word Tex, you should be a native Texan (born, raised and educated in Texas), be born before WW2, and consider any state not touching the Gulf of Mexico -way up north! :) Jere R. WTF members Hwa Chong and Sang Lee say Choue should have never been elected to replace Dr. Jun Jae Park because Choue was an appointed adviser instead of an elected official within the Korean Taekwondo Association executive council. The WTF requires candidates for president to be elected members of their home association, according to Chong and Lee, who were meeting with attorneys in Seoul, South Korea, Tuesday to discuss a possible legal challenge to Choue's incumbency. "WTF rules are written to be observed by everyone on an equal basis," said Lee, who had his candidacy denied due to similar circumstances. "No candidate should be excepted and every candidate should fully respect the WTF and its qualification standards." Choue was appointed interim president in June and is one of two candidates vying to fill the four-year term of Dr. Un Yong Kim, who resigned in February 2004. Park, who served as acting president until June, is the other candidate for the April 12 election in Madrid. Choue acknowledged that he was an appointed adviser to the Korean association, but said WTF rules don't differentiate between elected and appointed officials. He said that he took all the necessary steps to be elected and that the KTA sent a letter supporting his candidacy. Choue also denied a charge that he paid for travel expenses for WTF voters and called the allegations nothing more than a "smear campaign" headed into the elections. Chong and Lee say they want to make sure the elections run smoothly because of recent controversies surrounding taekwondo. The International Olympic Committee recommended last month that Kim, a vice president, be expelled for alleged corruption in South Korea. He was suspended from his IOC positions more than a year ago and is currently serving a two-year prison term on embezzlement and bribery charges in South Korea. Lee was forced to resign as president of the U.S. Taekwondo Federation last year after being accused of mismanaging the organization's funds. Officials also are concerned about taekwondo's status as an Olympic sport - it could be replaced by karate or the Chinese martial art Wushu - and the Olympic bid of Pyeongchang for the 2014 Winter Games. "There has been far too much controversy and bitterness surrounding taekwondo during this sensitive period, when its very standing in the Olympics is in dire danger," Chong said. --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2005 21:21:43 -0500 From: "Rick Clark" Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] Members question taekwondo president To: Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >Members question taekwondo president >by JOHN MARSHALL >Associated Press >Tue, Mar. 22, 2005 >Two members of the World Taekwondo Federation have questioned the >qualifications of interim president Choue Chong-won and would like to >remove him from office before next month's elections. >WTF members Hwa Chong and Sang Lee say Choue should have never been elected >to replace Dr. Jun Jae Park because Choue was an appointed adviser instead >of an elected official within the Korean Taekwondo Association executive >council. There was a discussion a not too long ago about having a central authority. This seems to be an excellent example of why there should NOT be a central authority in the martial arts. Politics like this and the criminal activates of Dr. Un Yong Kim a major reason I just plain refuse to be involved with such organizations. I hate to spoil the ending but.... you start the 'transfer' and you wait for alittle while then the program comes up and says that something went wrong... that you would have to earn the belt the old fashion way , the traditional way, join a school and put in the sweat and hard work.... and not to mention the time.... ... I was wondering if anyone knows where this site or program might be... I haven't any luck on finding it over the past couple of weeks.... If any one knows it PLEASE email me....
