Korea Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I am sure everybody on this list agrees that the political system in N. Korea is BAD. I think there are also a couple of people who don't agree with everything the US does. And I am convinced that a lot of people think that we Dutch people have a few crazy laws as well. I am not going to argue about it, or want to get involved in a political discussion here on the dojang digest. I think I am not the only one if I say that I would like to have a look in N. Korea once. I've been living in S. Korea for over a year now, and there surely are a few places in N. Korea I would like to see with my own eyes. As a matter of fact I think the system in N. Korea will change within the next ten years or so. How this is going to happen.......I don't know. The situation is very difficult. I guess changes will come from within. Maybe during the regime of the current leader, maybe his follow-up, maybe through a revolution. Probably under the influence of China. We all know that a military attack on N. Korea will cost a lot of lives in S. Korea as well. If it weren't for that, I think N. Korea should be first on the list after Iraq to be brought down. Now I am getting political anyway........... From a martial arts point of view, I think the North is totally uninteresting at this point. When you go there, you will get a state guide who will show you nothing but statues of the both Kims. Just read some of the stories you can find on the net. If you do want to have a nice martial arts experience in Korea, come to your gym ;) http://www.sangmookwan.com/ -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Bob Banham" To: Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 10:08:28 -0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] N. Korea et al. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Brooke, No name calling, just want to point out that the way you are told the world is by your politicians/media isn't necessarily how the world is! Dr. Kimm tells me that North Korea is a beautiful place and I trust him before I trust anyone's president or prime minister. And I haven't asked my students to do anything - they have jumped at the chance! My wife is honoured to be asked to go and would never forgive me if I suggested otherwise. Don't forget also that we Brits have a slightly different take on things. Like Korea, over the past two thousand years we have been invaded many times (by the Saxons, Normans, Vikings etc.) and it has shaped our national character. My original point before we launched into the 'political' dimension was that the true nature of martial arts should transcend politics and other self-glorifying agendas. It seems from some of the responses I have got that we have just proved it doesn't. I find that a great shame. Yes, a number of names of folks that were 'taken' by chubby GM wannabe appear here. Folks, take the time to review the list. You might be surprised (and embarrassed) to find your own name there. But you are correct that this is not the KHF with President GM Oh Se-lim that is more known. It is a group that started around 2001 or so and is head by GM Park. Alain, do you know why they give the name of your org in English as "The Corporation Korea Hapkido Federation"? It just seems like an unusual English translation/construction. But then again, you go to about any large city and you will find his equal who practices the same level of marketing and fraud. Really sad and annoying for those who actually worked hard and put in the time for the rank they have. Jere R.
