Karate master arraigned, out on 1G bail ======================================= Lawyer claims Robert Kim will be cleared of sex abuse charges once facts are revealed Saturday, March 26, 2005 By REGINALD PATRICK %%sourceline%% STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE Karate master Robert Kim, his powerful hands pinioned behind his back, stood mutely before Judge Ferne Goldstein in Stapleton Criminal Court yesterday for arraignment on charges that he sexually abused two teen-age girls who were his students. Adding to his woes, his family had to ante up $1,000 bail after the judge nixed a no-bail deal hashed out by the defense and prosecution. [TABLE NOT SHOWN][IMAGE] Kim, 35, a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do, was arrested Thursday at his New Dorp dojo and held overnight. Judge Goldstein set bail after a heated sidebar with lawyers for both sides -- during which she could be heard admonishing defense attorney George Vomvolakis to "listen to me!" Vomvolakis, an attorney with the high-priced law offices of Joseph Tacopina in Manhattan, complained to reporters outside the courthouse that he had seen lower bail set in far more serious cases. He insisted that his client, a co-owner of Dragon Kim's Karate USA, was clearly not a risk for flight. "My client has known about these allegations for a week," Vomvolakis said. "Instead of fleeing or attempting to flee, he contacted a lawyer to fight these charges." Kim's father, Jhong Uhk Kim, president of the borough's Korean-American Association, owner of the IHOP restaurant in Graniteville -- and a donor to the Republican Party -- paid the $1,000 out of his wallet as Kim's wife, Lisa, and his brothers, David and John, looked on. The brothers also are martial-arts instructors. Then Kim, dressed in a black-and-white sweat suit and sporting a ponytail, strolled out of the courthouse holding hands with his wife and flanked by family members and his lawyer. His next court date is May 4. The family declined comment before jumping into a white Mercedes-Benz and driving away. Kim's father, primary owner of the 20-year-old Dragon Kim's Karate USA and a ninth-degree black belt, stayed behind with the defense attorney to face reporters but did not speak. "Once the facts come out, Mr. Kim will be completely vindicated," Vomvolakis told the press. Two New Dorp girls, now 17, went to authorities a week ago and accused Kim of having molested them on a number of occasions over several years, beginning when one was 13 and the other 14. They said the abuse occurred while Kim was their teacher. In court papers, Kim, a resident of Old Bridge, N.J., is charged with sexual abuse, forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child -- all misdemeanors, his defense attorney noted. The charges would carry a maximum jail term of one year. The papers say the abuse occurred between 2000 and 2005. The father of one girl told the Advance the sexual abuse was "ongoing until recently." Neither girl now studies karate, he said. The father declined to say why the girls waited so long to come forward. According to the New York Post, the girls pledged silence, but one eventually told a teacher what allegedly happened. Kim's family originally tapped Staten Island attorney Felix Gilroy to represent him, but later apparently opted to bring in high-priced talent from the Tacopina law firm, which has been involved in a number of high-profile cases, including that of Abner Louima. His Web site touts Tacopina as "the hottest young defense attorney in New York." William Smith, a spokesman for District Attorney Daniel Donovan, a Republican, said the Island district attorney will seek to recuse himself from prosecuting the Kim case to avoid the appearance of impropriety because the elder Kim was a contributor to the GOP.
