But most 'X' had a Ph.D. It was the standard then that only medical professionals used the term Dr. So I asked my uncle in the USAF if they called him Dr. or Colonel as he has a Ph.D. is physics. He replied that "if I outrank them, they call me sir, if they outrank me, they call me Carl". <<>> --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 23:44:25 -0600 From: J R Hilland To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] super grand whatever and doing hkd quietly Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I do have way to much fun on the mats! Where else can you toss a person for distance or twist them up into a pretzel and not go to jail! :) But the pleasure was all mine. Next time we will have to spend more time chatting. Time sure does go by fast at that event... << To: "the_dojang" Date: Mon, 28 Mar 2005 09:36:13 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Martial Arts in the UK Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. Banham How close is Norwich to Manchester. It just seems like an unusual English translation/construction. *********************************** I'm not sure why Ray. Something I should put on the list to ask my instructor when I visit him later this year. I notice too that on my dan cert they have Korea on the logo, but use Korean down in the English text of the certificate for the name of the organization. I'd like to repeat what has already been said about taking it slow and easy and developing their self-confidence. It is a matter of trust and having the right training partner. It might also require some extra time after class to get it right. I agree with starting from their knees and doing a front break fall. Maybe focus only on their hand position and as that improves, then work on kicking their toes out and being able to catch their body. On the back break fall, start from a crouch, roll back on your butt and slap the hands flat at a 45-degree angle and the feet pointing up. Then you could build up to starting at a stand, crouching, falling down, to being gently pushed, and falling backward to the ground. On the side break fall, start from a crouch, cross your hands over the chest, tuck your chin, kick out one leg (looking like a Russian dancer) and fall to one side. Another option is to stand and put out the right leg and try to roll down the entire right side as you fall down, emphasizing that the entire side of the body has contact with the ground and then slapping. Make sure to tuck the chin down and slap the hands on all falls. The biggest fear is people thinking that they have to start from a stand and go right into a dramatic fall. Keep is simple and develop their confidence. I've been known to hang on to their belt to guide them down on a side break fall. Remember that some people are audio learners, some are visual and others are kinesthetic so if you can incorporate all three in demonstration and practice, it might be effective. I have gone through Hapkido and have my Black Belt. I had to overcome my fear and do it because it is essential to the program. My instructor also knew of my fears and put me with partners who could do good technique and help hold me while I fell. I also knew I could only do so many falls in a night and I was pooped out so we practice a lot of fitting in and then throwing every 5th technique, which is also effective and helpful. I was lucky to have another woman that I trained with regularly. I still have fears about kicking and having my other foot swept, but I do it because I need the practice. I'm not crazy about it but I do try (and I laugh at myself). I'm 48 years old and my body just isn't as nimble as 20 years ago. I don't practice Hapkido as much in regular classes and incorporate it more in my TKD. I took Hapkido because I wanted to develop more self-defense techniques and practice them. As my instructor has told me, "Face your fears." I would encourage having an open conversation with the students to hear what their fears are and trying to work around that as much as possible. Build their self-confidence and offer lots of praise. I am willing to share off line if anyone has questions. Connie J. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ok, so I really needed to see what is up with the CD, because having used hypnosis in the past for needing to get over a sleeping disorder, and it being sucessful, I don't want hypnotherapy to be treated as a joke. So I ordered it, hey for $12.00 I can affirm or not affirm opinions on this. Will I wake up as the new Bruce Lee at the age of 46, and a girl, OR, will I be lulled into a very relaxed state and be really refreshed the next morning and have a fantastic workout? OR, will I subconciously do something I never thought I would do? Hang in there! I'll let you know what happens, no matter what! Sure would be nice to be Bruce.... I'll keep my fingers crossed..... sandy --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
