Have you ever had a chance to compare/contrast DRAJJ and HKYS? Just curious....." Okay. This is to say that I am not ducking anything, but what I am about to say is explained much better by Takeda Tokimune in a series of interviews done for AIKIDO JOURNAL by Stanley Pranin when his publication was still called "AIKI NEWS". Specifically the issues were numbers 87 and 88 and came out in 1991. I am going to try and give you a Readers Digest Version. 1.) Daito-ryu material proceeds from a history of "yawara" techniques but not all the material is "yawara". 2.) The dividing line in DRAJJ material depends of whether one waits for the attacker to "make their move" or if one goes after the threat pre-emptively. 3.) If one waits for the other person to act first, this is defensive like the Water Principle in Hapkido (sort of). This is characterized by the late Takeda Soke as go no sen. 4.) Some people (LEO-s?) can't wait for the other person to attacker first. In those cases the LEO has to "attack" the perp to capture him. This is characterized as sen sen ("attack first and win"). 5.) Takeda goes on to make this clearer by saying that "Aiki applies to self-defense when the opponent attacks first. These two must not be confused. Thus, police do not use the word aiki; it is just ju jutsu. They fight with kiai using a sen-sen attack. Attack is kiai. Aiki on the other hand is is "go no sen". Police are permitted to attack first. This is why the police were permitted to study Daito-ryu though these days the mixture of Judo, Kendo, aikido, etc., used by police is usually referred to as taiho jutsu (arrest techniques)." Note the use of the term "jujutsu" which would also bear the transliteration of "yawara". To conclude, I suggest that this is why we do not see absolutely identical curriculum between what the Japanese Ryu offers and what the Hapkido people practice. The Hapkido Arts were infused with that portion of DRAJJ (as such) which was the more "pro-active" portion of the curriculum. BTW: Takeda Soke went on to say that "ordinary people" were taught a more "self-defense" version of DRAJJ based loosely on go no sen or waiting for the attack but more pragmatic in execution as one might see in the arrest techniques. This is the material that Ueyshiba was taught (pg 47). FWIW. Your argument to why Hackworth is so great, sounds like you are about 14 years old?! I have never met Hackworth, nor have I ever responded to anything on this digest regarding him, so I am not a propaganda Hackworth basher. Let's go over the points you have mentioned: 1. "Having Dan rank in HKD and TKD" -- ok, prove it and the ranks he holds. Does he hold legitimate ranks in the styles he says he does? Are you sure? 2. "Professor and Scholar" - ok, I might give you the "scholar" thing -- I think I have seen him write an article or two on various subjects of marital arts (given they aren't plagiarized). But Professor? Does he have a legitimate PhD from an accredited school? Prove it. 3. "Gentleman" - maybe to some, but definitely not to all. 4. "Loved by all" - again, dude, if you really had logical arguments, then the word "all" should be rarely used. From the discussions on this digest in the past...he is NOT loved by all. 5. "Feared by many" - ok, I can give you that. But that "many" can be children and the elderly... 6. "Alter ego on TV" - big whopptie do! Do you idolize OJ Simpson or 7. "he lost 20 inches" - you got to be kidding me. 20 inches where? Combined inches on his entire body? I can diet for a week and do that. Granted, I do think it is great that he lost 20 inches...but I thought he was so darn smart, respected, feared, etc, that he would not have been HUGE in the first place. Philippe Villanueva, 33, formerly an employee of the Bluewater Taekwondo club in London, also is charged with a count of sexual exploitation. Villanueva turned himself in to London police on March 17. He appeared in court and was released. He is to return to court on April 14. Const. Jeff Arbing said yesterday police were following up on a complaint and a computer has been seized. Arbing described the investigation as ongoing and would not say if the charges were related to Bluewater, where Villanueva no longer works. Villanueva has coached several top-flight London martial arts athletes, including Kamil Dubinski, who won Pan Am gold in 2002. Villanueva was trainer of the Canadian men's team that competed at the Pan American championships in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic in November. He also coached two Bluewater women athletes, Noula Mina and Victoria Heath. Issam Thabit, who owns Bluewater Taekwondo on Dulaney Drive, said Villanueva's employment with the club was terminated a month ago. Villanueva was arrested after he returned from a two-week martial arts meet in Korea. --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Thu, 31 Mar 2005 06:49:02 -0800 (PST) From: John Merwin To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] The_Dojang] Hapkido video Clips Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thanks, that was well preformed and outstanding nice to see others doing HKD old school. We had a DRAJJ instructor come into our hapkido club weekly for years, a French fellow, a professor at the University, who studied in Japan. We did several kicks, so I don't think kicks were really added by the early hapkidoin as noted in your statement. I did happen to skim through the current issue of tkd times last night at the dojang that someone had brought (haven't read it in years). The kicks that Master Lim (once your retina have reattached after seeing that shinny dobok) mentions in his interview are basically the same ones that we practiced in DRAJJ several decades ago. Basically the kicks were to the groin, knees, and low spine, and used as a balance break - although they were not numbered as Master Lim mentioned, they were named. The techniques in DRAJJ were similar to hapkido, but the basic motion was VERY different. Interestingly enough, the 30 degree theory of motion that is commonly taught in hapkido was also taught in DRAJJ. With that said, the first time I did a demonstration in front of Dr. Kimm He Young at the big event in Jackson, his first comment to me was, "where did the Japanese influence in your technique come from?" Nothing missed the man.... Jere R. A congressman raised this question yesterday as he put to task the Philippine Taekwondo Association (PTA) for the injuries suffered by Ma. Criselda Roxas, a member of the national team bound for the World Taekwondo Championship in Spain and a gold medalist in the last Southeast Asian Games. Rep. Crispin "Boying" Remulla said he would file a resolution in Congress that will look into whether the PTA may have violated some provisions of the law prohibiting violence against women and children. Remulla said he and fellow lawmakers Liza Maza and Teddy Boy Casino will press Congress to conduct an investigation in aid of legislation. Roxas, an 18-year-old La Salle student, was brought to the hospital last March 15 after being knocked out and her jaw broken by Brix Ramos in a sparring session. She stayed there for nine days and was advised to go on all-liquid diet for two months after her release. PTA vice-president Hong Sung Chon said what happened "was an accident." "Pitting men against women in taekwondo is common practice not only here, but all over the world. This is one way of toughening them up especially when they are training for the world championship," Hong explained. Hong said this practice has been going on since the eighties, resulting in not a few injuries to male and female jins alike. However, the former Korean world champion, who has made the Philippines home for decades now, admitted that Roxas' case is the worst accident so far. Still, Hong said they would continue this practice despite the accident. "Have you seen how European female jins fight? They fight like men. Now, if our female players don't train against men, how can they fight the Europeans?" said Hong. National coach Stephen Fernandez, a former world-class jin himself, said they don't put female jins to unnecessary risks. "We've been sparring against women even during my time. We hold back and try to earn points in the body. Kaso inabot nga si Criselda (Roxas). Aksidente," said Fernandez, who was present during the sparring session. Fernandez denied that they did not attend to Roxas after being knocked out as charged by Remulla. He said secretary-general Noli Gabriel went to Roxas and succeeded to revive her. It is true, Fernandez admitted, that Roxas was egged on to continue, but only for the purpose of toughening her up. "It is difficult to stand up after being knocked out, but we have to let her continue to overcome the psychological trauma," said Fernandez, who said Roxas was brought to the hospital after a few meaningless kicks. Remulla, he said, was fed with conflicting reports. "Admittedly, taekwondo is a contact sport that from time to time unfortunately results to its practitioners being injured. However, in as far as the incident is concerned, my office has received disturbing details that Ms. Roxas may have been unnecessarily exposed to danger," Remulla said. Remulla said the PTA has some explaining to do, "especially since the incident seemed to have been deliberately kept away from public and media attention." Hong said he welcomes the investigation as he invited the congressmen to watch their training sessions. Roxas is one of the country's rising jins. She won the bronze medal in the Asian taekwondo championships and the gold in the Southeast Asian championships held last year. Fernandez said depending on her determination, Roxas still has time to recuperate and see action in the SEA Games set in November. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
