This is such an amazing accomplishment for any martial artist, and I find myself at a loss for words as to how I can express my excitement at seeing Master DeWitt receive such an honor. I don't believe that it is typical for a man of Master DeWitt's rank to spend the entire class period of every class on the floor with his students, nor to I think it is typical for a high ranking master to make himself so available to all of his students to answer questions and offer wisdom and guidance. Master DeWitt does both consistently. Because of that the standards in our dojang remain very high and the atmosphere is warm, respectful and courteous. Congratulations, sir! To my eye the kicks shown in this video series were sweeps, not what I typically think of as kicks. I have not seen the tapes that Master Rim & Joe Sheya did. I know the 10 kicks from DJN Choi are not sweeping type kicks but more short quick snapping kicks. Take care Todd M. This 400lb nothing is a self-promoted nothing. He has no skill, no morality and no Ph.D. He stole $500 from me and never delivered anything. I don't expect anyone to defend this guy. He is the embodiment of everything wrong in martial arts wrapped up into one enormously out of shape body! They are all low and primarily designed to help with target displacement. None are designed to be effectively used on their own. Refer to either of Kim He Young's Hapkido Bibles to see the kicks of Hapkido. A handfull are the low sweep type kicks of Hapkiyusool but most are the kicks that were added when Hapkido was being enhanced, expanded, completed. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! The pics of the ten kicks should be at the bottom of that page. Regarding your comment about Master Kimm asking you about the Japanese influence in your technique, would you mind giving us some details? I'm very curious to know how he was distinguishing Hapkido from DRAJJ or another Japanese art. Regards, Howard Jere Hilland wrote: "I studied daitoryu-aikijujutsu in my younger days at Texas A&M. We had a DRAJJ instructor come into our hapkido club weekly for years, a French fellow, a professor at the University, who studied in Japan. We did several kicks, so I don't think kicks were really added by the early hapkidoin as noted in your statement. I did happen to skim through the current issue of tkd times last night at the dojang that someone had brought (haven't read it in years). The kicks that Master Lim (once your retina have reattached after seeing that shinny dobok) mentions in his interview are basically the same ones that we practiced in DRAJJ several decades ago. Basically the kicks were to the groin, knees, and low spine, and used as a balance break - although they were not numbered as Master Lim mentioned, they were named. The techniques in DRAJJ were similar to hapkido, but the basic motion was VERY different. Interestingly enough, the 30 degree theory of motion that is commonly taught in hapkido was also taught in DRAJJ. With that said, the first time I did a demonstration in front of Dr. Kimm He Young at the big event in Jackson, his first comment to me was, "where did the Japanese influence in your technique come from?" Nothing missed the man...." --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Fri, 01 Apr 2005 09:26:32 -0600 From: J R Hilland To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] hkd drajj kicks Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Correct in hapkido, but that is not what I was talking about. In daitoryu, the kick was often the balance break or used with the balance break. <<>> --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2005 08:48:53 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] Vietnam aims to win big at World Taekwondo Championship Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Vietnam aims to win big at World Taekwondo Championship Thanh Nien Daily Vietnam's taekwondo fighters are aiming to win gold and silver medals at the international World Taekwondo Championship taking place April 10 to 18 in Madrid, Spain. So far, the highest achievements for the country's top taekwondo fighters have been three bronze medals at world-level competitions. Fighters Nguyen Quoc Huan, Cao Trong Chinh, Phan Tan Dat and Bich Ngoc are Vietnam's hopes for gold or silver medals at the 17th (10th Women's) World Taekwondo Championship. Vietnam will send five males and five females to partake in 10 weight divisions from under 47 kg to 84 kg. A couple of months ago, Vietnam sent 12 taekwondo athletes to China for intense training and preparation for the tournament in Spain. The event will attract dozens of international taekwondo fighters from across the world.
