Mendoza Inquirer News Service Editor's Note: Published on page A26 of the Apr. 3, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer IF it was an accident as they say it was, what a shame. I refer to an ugly incident with Ma. Criselda Roxas, a member of the national taekwondo team, at the receiving end of it. As reported in the papers, Roxas suffered a broken jaw inflicted -- accidentally it is said -- by Brix Ramos in a sparring session recently. The injury sent Roxas to a 9-day stay at a hospital, where her jaw had been reattached through wiring. The sadder part was, Roxas lost her chance to play in the World Taekwondo Championship in Spain. Nada. The saddest part was, she had been ordered to go on a liquid diet for two months. Adios pasta adorada. I don't know what her favorite food is, but what I'm sure of is, she will not be eating CPA (Chicken Pork Adobo) for the next eight weeks or so. If that's not punishment enough -- CPA being the national food to many Pinoys -- I don't know what is. Come now lawmakers Boying Remulla, Liza Maza and Teddy Boy Casino saying they will investigate the case and, if need be, come up later maybe with a law prohibiting the pitting of man against woman in a contact sport. They could be barking up the wrong tree and I say, cut the crap, your honors? There is no known contact sport at the moment that pits man against woman. Sparring between man and woman, yes. But a contact sport pitting man against woman? You must be kidding. That'd be an automatic mismatch and no one with a sane mind would even dare think of putting up one. Maybe in the movies, yes, as in Catwoman versus Batman, or Wonder Woman versus Superman. But in real life, that's a no-no. Have you ever seen Muhammad Ali's daughter, who is now world boxing champion, fight a man atop the ring? I've heard about former world champion Rolando Navarette getting knocked out by a woman. But it happened with the aid of a lead pipe or something that the boxer's lover used against Navarette in a fit of rage. Mismatch. And that duel wasn't held atop the ring, mind you. In short, unsanctioned by the GAB -- he-he. In the case at bar, Roxas, an 18-year-old taekwondo jin from De La Salle University, was not actually in an actual combat with Ramos. The reports said they were in a sparring session, which, under the rules of the sport, was perfectly legal. A spar is supposed to be a simulation of a fight between two persons, as in two boxers or judokas. It is done to either test the strength of one preparing for a big fight, or to perfect strategy and tactics needed when actual fight begins. There are times when a spar gets out of control, as when one side suddenly takes the mock contest seriously when he/she feels the other side is dishing off real hits. But that is the exception, rather than the rule. And if that happens, it's absolutely between two combatants of the same gender. That's is why to imply that Brix Ramos, a male, had intentionally delivered a real blow to the jaw of Ma. Criselda Roxas, a woman, would be unthinkable, if not a downright lie. In his explanation of the incident, Hong Sung Chon, vice president of the Philippine Taekwondo Association, said: "Pitting men against women in taekwondo is common practice not only here, but all over the world. This is one way of toughening women up especially when they are training for the world championship." I can believe him. My own daughter, Malaya, is a taekwondo black-belter. She admitted to me it's common of her to spar with men. In short, as I was saying, Roxas suffered an accident and what a shame, if not a pity, it had happened. I know that having one's jaw broken in sparring sessions is a nightmare of the first degree. But then, hasn't Muhammad Ali himself suffered a broken jaw -- in an actual fight at that with Ken Norton -- some decades back? Ali lost that fight but in a rematch, he beat Norton. Her injury will heal in no time, but for Ma. Criselda Roxas, recovering from the trauma of this sad saga this early in her career is what should be of paramount importance. There, actually, is no need to rush things up, my dear child. This accident -- if it was really one -- why, charge it to experience. When you are 18, the world is there for the taking. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "kevin_janisse" To: Date: Sat, 2 Apr 2005 18:00:58 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Congratuations Master DeWitt Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Excellent news on your promotion Master DeWitt. I have been teaching TKD and HKD in the same location for 5 1/2 years, 5 nights a week and occasionally on Saturdays. During this time I have paid above average rent for the square footage that I am using (kind of long story - don't ask), and as a result I have never paid myself 1 cent. In fact, I have actually dug into my own pocket to pay expenses at times. The lease is going to expire in a few months and the landlord is unwilling to reduce the rent to an amount that is closer to market value. The only options I have, as I see them, are: 1. Stay where I am and continue to pay excessive rent. 2. Move to a larger facility and pay a little more in rent than I am paying right now (which I can't afford unless I enroll more students as a result of the move), and pay about $15,000 in relocation and setup costs (which I don't have). 3. Move to a nearby town, which has 1/2 the population as the town I'm in and pay the same relocation and setup costs. 4. Move across town - into a shopping center - into a storefront literally adjacent to another martial art school teaching TKD. The rent would be lower and the relocation and setup costs would be lower (mainly due to the restrictions on signage). This other school has been there for 2 1/2 years and their main focus is their After School Program with some evening classes. My focus is strictly traditional TKD and HKD. 5. Find a recreational facility and reduce my teaching schedule and visibility to the public 6. Close completely. I have a very loyal group of students that I don't want to abandon. Plus, a 3 year old little girl that I would love to see grow up in the positive environment of a traditional dojang. But, 5 1/2 years of teaching full time along with a full time day job is starting wear me down - especially since I have not generated any personal income from teaching all these years. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
