Fighting in the local TAD tournament, defending yourself on the street, and fighting in the UFC are all different. Woman can, and I believe should fight men in a point type tournament. It will give them a better since of reality without getting them hurt. I have my woman and men students make partners during Ho Shin Sool practice to limit the possibilities of the woman getting a false since of security. After all if they are grabbed on the street it will probably be by a man. Self defense is different. They have the element of surprise working for them, and running is an option, but running will not get you a point in a tournament. Lastly the UFC type competition. This is not a place for a woman vs man match up. It would except in the most unusual of circumstances be a mismatch not to mention the morality problem of having a woman knocked unconscious by a man on TV. my point is martial arts are equally important and useful for both man and woman but stay realistic. JP was given a 9th Dan by the World KIDO Federation. The World KIDO Federation is distinctly different from the DaeHan KiDoHwe. They take the bills each month, total them up, and divide the amount by the number of students. The teacher, one of Yamada's original students, who retired many years ago from his line of work in the software business, just teachers, the students run the dojo, pay the bills, etc. As many of the students work at HP in Houston, they also have mats at HP and have class during lunch in the covered parking garage and have for about a decade. They are always training. I sent my brother to study with Lee Sensei several decades ago, not because he is an aikido teacher, but because he is a great teacher - period. The best in Houston in the ki arts, in my opinion. Much to my surprise, I was pleased to see Lee Sensei and his senior students show up at my mothers funeral and reception 4 months ago. A long drive from Houston to East Texas. They did not know my mother, nor my father. They did this because they are a family, and my brother is part of that family. I was very impressed, just as I was several decades ago. Just some food for thought as a dojang is not a trade school, an instructor should have a passion for being a student, and by extension, teaching, but only if there is no one locally to study with. I just don't mean really local, as I drove from Galveston Island to Houston 3 x a week to study with my teacher in the late 80's and early 90's after a 9 hour day in the office. During the other nights, I taught hapkido locally at several taekwondo dojang, to get some mat time. To explain further, each time we have moved across the country at the request of my wife's employer, I first looked for a hapkido teacher I could learn from, when that avenue is exhausted, I would then open a hapkido dojang in order to practice the art I have a passion for. For example, if we were to move near Jackson, it would be foolish for me to open a hapkido dojang, as I would be at Master West doorstep every evening as a happy student. Just my thoughts... Jere R. Dartfish, a leader in sports video analysis, spent three days with the athletes and coaches demonstrating sports video training applications. Since the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 where 45 medals were won by athletes using Dartfish in their training routine, Dartfish has been working closely with many Olympics programs to help them in their training process. "Dartfish is a technology tool that allows coaches and athletes to communicate on a much more efficient and effective level," said Kristin Dilworth-Collins, Director of Education & USOC/NGB Relations for Dartfish. Eighty percent of Olympic sports have utilized Dartfish technology, including track & field, softball and gymnastics. "Any sport that is technique driven or has scouting needs can benefit from it," Dilworth-Collins said. The software can be highly beneficial for the athletes wherever the athlete has to perform a repetitive motion, the intricacies of which are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye. Examples are manifold and include such diverse movements such as a serve in tennis, the typical rowing motion, the (underwater) turn in breast-stroking, a dive, or the movement of a horse across a course. "I'm really excited with Taekwondo specifically because the benefits are obvious," added Dilworth-Collins. "This is a sport which can be greatly enhanced with this powerful tool." With Dartfish, the athlete is filmed with a digital camera - typically by the coach - and the film is fed into the software which allows the filmed material to be analyzed in ways not possible before. Movements can be slowed down to picture after picture sequences thus making them visible, drawing tools and other analysis features allow the manipulation of the film, sequences can be overlayed with reference film to show differences to a model etc. Overall a dramatically enhanced training potential is opened up which leads to better results in much faster time than possible before. "The Taekwondo coaches will be able to review video that not only gives them an enhanced view of their athletes, but also the ability to communicate more effectively with the athletes," Dilworth-Collins said. "It allows them to give both verbal and visual instructions during a training session." U.S. Men's Head Coach Jean Lopez was very impressed with the Dartfish technology. "This tool will help take Taekwondo to the next level," said Lopez. "It's a great tool for instant feedback and in scouting opponents. It's an amazing technology that Taekwondo has never been exposed to. I feel like a little kid in a candy store, because it's given me a whole new world to explore." "In the future, we see Dartfish as an integral part of developing our program as part of our being a 21st-century sport," said USA Taekwondo CEO Bob Gambardella. "We would like to thank Dartfish President Victor Bergonzoli for allowing Kristin Dilworth-Collins to take time from her busy schedule to attend our camp and show our coaches the latest technology that will enhance our sport at all levels. In the near future, we plan on having this technology available for members at USA Taekwondo national-level events. Oh please........ Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I travel through the South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota area and there is a group of schools out here loosely under one Kwan Jang Nim who all adverstise their schools the same way. They all say they are "WTF-certified schools." Several also state that all gup ranks are "WTF-certified." PLEASE!!!!! I just get tired of this. It is essentially false advertising and should be subject to fraud. The WTF does NOT certify dojangs/schools, black belts or instructors. The Kukkiwon has an instructor program (4th dan and up, occassionally 3rd dans close to promotion) and has black belt certification, but the WTF does not. The Kukkiwon does not certify anyone under black belt and also does not certify dojangs. Smell the roses people..... Now I know several in this regional group have stated they have been told to advertise this way by their Kwan Jang Nim, but right is right. While I really do not care how they advertise, I do feel sorry for their ignorance. Any lawyers on the list? Could they be brought action against by a complaint to the state attorney generals for false advertising? If so, seems they should be aware of their liability. Thanks. [Ok, so I read the yellow pages when I travel!!!] Dana --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/the_dojang Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
