Unless there is a signed contract between the owner of the property and the TKD School, there should not be a reason he can not or should not rent to you. If you look at other businesses - in a mall for example you will see clothing stores next to each other, jewelry stores next to each other, food courts, lawyers, doctors, all have businesses next to each other. I am not a lawyer nor do I have any idea about the laws in your area - but - I suspect if he is refusing to rent to you "just because" and not based on a contract he has with the other business you would probably have a case to take to court. Now is this the best location for you? I have no idea but it would irk me if I was told I could not rent without good cause. But on the other hand if I had a TKD school and someone wanted to start another one next to me I would probably be a bit upset. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Steve: "......Do any of you have any advice? I'm thinking maybe some private lessons, or maybe there is some kind of art that is less hard on the joints....." I want to offer some advice but I need some help about what your goals are. If you are asking if there is a way you can continue to train at the same intensity forever and a day, then I have to say "no". Starting somewhere in your 30-s you will begin to lose about 10% a decade or about 1% a year in muscle tissue. Thats why somebody like the late "Tiger" Kim was so fabulous. He was 60 or so and still doing kicks that most youngsters still had trouble with. The same goes for Cho. But these guys are very much exceptions rather than the rule. Last year I got a real nasty "wake-up" call about what my body could do and not do. I am back to do spin-kicks but am noticeably impaired. I still target "jump-spin-kicks" but I find I spend a lot more time trouble-shooting very specific limits and problem areas. Personally I think this is the "Wall" most practitioners hit sometime in their career. Some work through it and some just throw their hands up. Me? I would rather bust-out than rust-out, so I participate in every class, not just direct. here are some of the things that help me with these challenges. 1.) Liquid vitamins over tablets. I use CENTRUM Advanced Formula. 2.) Alcohol, coffee and colas. You have a decision to make. 3.) Slow the pace; increase the reps. Snapping throught one or two forms so you can get on to something else will require "payment later". Do four forms a bit slower and let the practice sink-in to the muscle-memory. Do 20 kicks slowly for form rather than ten kicks blasting for power. 4.) Set a goal of approximating what everybody else in the class is doing. You may not make it as far as do they but you will be farther ahead of the guy who says "if I can't be as good, I don't want to be anything at all". Oh, and BTW, stop assessing your practice according to what everyone else is doing. Everyone else is not you. 5.) Begin to focus on weapons. Weapons are nothing but "amplifiers of intent". If you are having a hard itme "expressing yourself" you probably need an "amplifier". After all, things like sticks and canes are always sold to people as implements for helping them deal with their infirmaties. Had you planned on waiting until you actually NEEDED your cane to learn to incorporate it into your Hapkido practice? Re: Pellegrini, 9th Dan Dae Han Kido Hae Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I find it amazing of the outstanding communications between the various and fine martial artist on this digest and it daily e-mails. It just further proves to me that even thought I have been studying MA's for over 20 years, that I am still a baby and scratching the surface of so much to learn from the many various arts. It is also a fact that there many well respected and successful martial artist instructors as well as fakes. I have meet my share of both! Many fakes seem to enjoy the text and chatrooms to expand their egos throughout the internet. For everyone's info, GM John Pellegrini is one of the most respected and very successful instructors throughout the world. His web page may have had an incorrect verbage in where his credentials come....but unlike many around..his are real!!! His philosophy and techniques are as genuine. Success among ones pears seems to bread contempt and jealously. I just hope one day that I will be as successful and may draw such criticism from others as he does. I Enjoy all your comments on the digest! Clearly Mr. Pellegrini created a large money making organization, but it didn't spring from his Hapkido knowledge or his Hapkido background. If that is the definition of successful instructor for some, then so be it... What does your instructor say? What does the leader of the TSD MDK say? Who is the leader of TSD MDK? I can tell you what is taught by HC Hwang Kwan Jang Nim in the Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. The problem is that although the hyungs you mentioned have been practiced by the Moo Duk Kwan for many years. They are not hyungs created by the Moo Duk Kwan's founder. This leaves room for debate on where the Ki Hops should be. Chil Sang Hyungs, and Yuk Ro Hyungs may be easier to define. E-mail off the digest and I will let you know where the Ki-Hops are in the hyungs you requested, as taught by Kwan Jang Nim Hwang Kee, Kwan Jang Nim HC Hwang, and the World Moo Duk Kwan. Up until a few years ago, GM Seo was the head of Dae Han Kido as well as World Kido, and he had been for many years. Prior to that, GM Suh, his brother, also was Chairman of Dae Han Kido Hae. I had been involved with Dae Han Kido Hae before WKF came into existence, and Master Kim, who now runs DHKH, actually spent some time at my home here in Canada during one of our annual July 1st weekend seminars. When the split occurred, I opted to stay with GM Seo because he is able and willing to travel and teach... that is all I am interested in. I believe that Gm Choi was elected as the org's first Chairman, a mostly titular position. Lee Kyu-jin was the first President. Kim Du-young was the org's second elected President. Suh In-hyuk was the org's first VP. Myself I am ex WTSDA (UK) which I don't really want to get into at the moment, however I our school have affiliated with the European Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do Federation (EMTF) under the guidance of Grandmaster Salm (8th Dan TSD, 9th TKD and 9th Dan Hapkido). He is a fantastic man and I privileged to be part of his organisation. I have been in his company when he talked about the old times training with KJN Hwang Kee and I am truly humbled to be privy to it. I'll let you know the outcome of the grading but currently recovering from a muscle sprain to my first and second vertebrae from training to hard. I can only assume that you are a student of his as there is one credential on his site that I know was purchased solely to add a line to the Resume. I am not going to go into details but there is also a site that suggest "Grand Master John Pelligrini, the only American who holds 9th Dan in Hapkido in Korea, 8th Dan in Taekwondo and certified instructor of Aikido and Jeet Kune Do." Anyone else out there wanna contest that statement. I don't know him. I have never seen him demonstrating HKD. I only know that which I have mentions, all of which makes him suspect to me. just my 2 cents.
