Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir, How many days a week do you train? Do have adequate rest periods between training periods? Do you get an injury to heal, or have they "caught up to you"? Trust me, Sir, there ARE domino effects if you do not "take care of yourself". I had to back off, get treatment, heal up, and get ready for the "long haul"(rest of our lives). This meant I could not train until recently for quite a while.(I do not consider teaching training). I am easing back into things and having the best time I have had in years, but it took a lot of discipline to just wait and let something heal and then go up to the next level in traning. I had to start at ground level again, was wondering what to do when Mr. Stovall posted his wonderful program on training. I liked it and am working at it, trying in my low minded way to take my time and not re-injure myself. Before this, I had posted a request for help on healing after treatment for heel spurs and got a an e-mail from Master Bruce Sims on do's and dont's, suppliments, etc. which has been a boon to me and I remain in his debt for his kindness and wisdom. I hope everything works out for you, Sir. Really, going back to a dicussion of a few weeks ago, I like most forms of music and do incorporate them into my training regimen where proper and possible. Took up Aikido and kept getting knee injuries during forward rolls. How Come? Taking some time off the knee cleared up. Took up Hapkido last year, no problems. Talking to my Hapkido master and senior instructors I figured out that what was going on was that the Aikido teacher - an excellent Aikidoka - was very pedantic about how to roll, and it just did not suit my body, particularly a knee prone to recurring bursitis. Whereas in Hapkido, the master gives us the technique, ensures that we roll safely, but then encourages us to change the technique in minor ways to suit our own bodies. I kind of favour the knee so that I do a much tighter roll on the right than the left. As well as techniques that may not suit your body, are you doing too much? I have practiced Tae Kwon-do for 17 years, teaching for 15, Yoga for almost as long, cross-trained for various periods in other martial arts, switched to Hapkido and Haidong Gumdo last year. But recently I have finally realized that at 45 I just can't take the pressure of full-time work, plus 10-12 various physically demanding sessions per week, plus an hour or so own practice at home per day. My back told me! As a result I've just been sidelined by the Doctor for at least a week of total abstinence from my passions. I would keep up the Hapkido but have a good long look at how much you are pushing yourself, and talk to yuor instructor about the problems. A quality teacher will tailor their program to your needs, and will explain how you can self tailor by monitoring yourself during classes, and will partner with you in addressing these problems. Robert -----Original Message----- "Hi All Have any of you "more mature" martial artists experienced your bodies just not being able to handle hapkido training any more? I started my training 3 1/2 years ago at age 48 and this stuff literally changed my life. (Reading this board has also helped immensely). But I've been finding that each year, everything hurts more. Without going into details, I've taken off for the last 3 months and I'm not sure my back and knees are going to allow me to participate in classes any more. Do any of you have any advice? I'm thinking maybe some private lessons, or maybe there is some kind of art that is less hard on the joints." --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "kikbut@joimail.com" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] "WTF certified school and gup ranks Date: Fri, 08 Apr 2005 07:49:08 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The link below is info regarding kikkiwon training course. I don't have my copies at my desk here at work, but one might try Funakoshi's Kohan or Nakayama's book(s) to get close to where Master Itosu would have Kihop. I will also look at Kang Uk Lee's and Shin, Jae Chul's books tonight which are two opinions that are fairly close. GM Ho Sik Pak (great warior) also has a video series which gives another opinion.... I don't go to the gym and work out as much as I'd like to so I can be guaranteed that I won't be losing weight and adding muscles like I wanted but at least I am getting the self -defense techiques and the TKD that will give me more confidence. Working toward my Black Belt is a rewarding experience. I enjoy the different ranks, the rigorous exercises, though only 3 times per week. I will be testing for my cameo belt soon and I'm told that's really when the sparring starts in classes and testing. I am looking forward to it and am still searching for someone to spar with. I've followed some of the exercises you readers have generously donated to help me and I thank you, though I may not have contacted you directly, I'd like to do it here. I do feel more confident, feel some of my muscles are tighter, (therefore bigger), I do 50 repititions of 10 lb weights regularly on each arm, and am continuing to get more pushups under my belt as the weeks go by. I will need to get higher weights for the reps, and perhaps get some other weights and do bench presses. .. I have been told that will help my stomach muscles (tighten my stomach). In all, it is a rewarding experience to reach each belt as I go along. I enjoy reading the articles here, and I really get a kick out of receiving the wmvs (movies, clips of kicks, etc). I was going to go to a tournament this weekend and demo my yellow belt, but got the willies and have decided against doing so. I'd like any suggestions (for or against) doing tournament, specially at my low level rank. I am interested to meet other TKD students and perhaps this is a good and best way. But I'd like some feed back from you all who have so many years experience. Thanks in advance. Write me privately or here. John Pellegrinj ia a Master at playing a game he invented, self promotion on the internet and in magazines. He is the P.T.Barnum of Hapkido.and there certainly is a "Sucker born every day". To compare him to Rudy Timmerman, Hal Whalen, and J.R. West is comic at best. It is fine to get others on whatever pretext to promote you as you jump from one organiozation to another and grant you certificates, but when the first line of his claims is false (now gone from the web site after my comments to Sara Seo), it calls ino question how much of the rest is "dealer puffery". I started my study of Hapkido before John did, have spent way more hours on the mat than he has in Hapkido as have a lot of other people. I have sat in late night sessions with him after he had a few too msany drinks while he demeaned GM SEO, saying "how much money do I have to spend with that old man to get what I want from him" If he is such an expert, then he knows what ranks and titles he actually earned. To claim one he never had is the act of an ultimate wannabee. No matter what he knows he isn't sure enough of himself to tell the truth. I personally am sick of his students, followers, and seconds speaking for him. If he is a man, let's hear from him. Of course his students believe he is a good teacher otherwise why study with him. He should spend his time on the mat instead of falsifying his credentials. John Pellegrini is so in need of another title, another rank, another picture taken beside a real amrtial artist then he should change the name of his art from "Combat Hapkido" to "Camera Hapkido". It's so nice to see a fellow TKD'er post on this board. I am a student of ITA, (International Taekwondo Alliance,) here in Texas. In response to your concerns about competing at a low rank level: I say "Phooey!" I encourage you to re-examine the tenets that you reiterate each time you begin your class. Somewhere in your tenets, the concept of "Courage" is addressed. I, myself, faced my very first national tourney as a white belt, after having joined only three weeks prior. (My instructor must have thought I was a bit lofty in my pursuits!) But I came home with 2 medals. Ultimately, during our next belt awards ceremony, I was, as a white belt, awarded a "Texas Top Ten Award"! My point being: You may be in a position of "burgeoning innoncence", but you still harbor the neccessary skill for the rank level you possess. Practice through repititon, teaching your body "muscle memory" so you can free your mind to concentrate on refining your skills. You certainly don't want to wait until you are a senior rank to face your first tourney challenge, do you? Naw...! I didn't think so! Good luck to you. And remeber, you are competing against fellow yellow belts who will be just as nervous and lost as (or worse,) as you may be feeling! Good luck in you 1st tourney!!! You find that Tiger in you and go for it! They were competition clauses and a lot of schools, and other businesses, use include them in their leases. I would not be surprised that this is what you are seeing here. Brent > I have since found out that I cannot move into the shopping center and > open up in the unit next to the other TKD school without the owner of this > other school giving his blessing - according to the property manager. Unless there is a signed contract between the owner of the property and the TKD School, there should not be a reason he can not or should not rent to you. If you look at other businesses - in a mall for example you will see clothing stores next to each other, jewelry stores next to each other, food courts, lawyers, doctors, all have businesses next to each other. I am not a lawyer nor do I have any idea about the laws in your area - but - I suspect if he is refusing to rent to you "just because" and not based on a contract he has with the other business you would probably have a case to take to court. Now is this the best location for you? I have no idea but it would irk me if I was told I could not rent without good cause. But on the other hand if I had a TKD school and someone wanted to start another one next to me I would probably be a bit upset.
