This year in the weekend of May 21st the second Myung Jae Nam Memorial Festival will be held at the IHF headquarters in Yong-Inn. Frederick Loveret outlined the process quite susinctly in one of his essays. a.) Go into a late-hours bar just before closing. b.) Have members of your class select the largest, meanest person as their respective target. c.) Each person will then spit in his targets' drink. d.) When your class members get out of the hospital, do it again. They also use no-end of Japanese and Okinawan kata albeit with Korean names. Oddly enough I can find no resources to support the use of these bits prior to the Japanese Occupation. Now, that doesn't mean that I won't use a ranking system and fancy titles, but why not just go directly to Japan and take a Japanese art if someone wants to use Japanese nomenclature and structure. Whats with trying to turn Korean traditions into bad copies of Japanese traditions? Next thing ya know somebody will be taking Japanese sword and try to pass it off as Korean sword. FWIW. Keeping this a KMA post, I would surmise that greasing oneself with the aforementioned bacon while in the "proper state" from the beer may prove to be a viable defense from those wrist grabs. Maybe even from chokes, etc. Has anyone ever experimented with this? Respectfully, George --__--__-- Message: 14 From: "Frank Clay" To: Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005 06:15:11 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Master Pak Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net JC, <> Once again, he did not promote himself. But I do have a question: Master Pak accepted a promotion from his senior after training and so forth. He is the Kwanjang of his organization and we improperly translate this term as grandmaster. So explain to me how this is different from what Hwang Kee himself did even if Master Pak promoted himself? Hwang Kee admitted to having learned from books. Supposedly he did gain some minor training from someone named Yang Kuk Jin and I have tried to locate that person. Apparently, and I mean only apparently, he did not exist and he was not a member of THE Yang family as has been purported per the Yang family itself. It would seem to me that this is a case of throwing stones whilst living in a glass house. And as I stated, technically everyone using the title grandmaster for kwanjang is wrong. There is no such title. In fact in 2003 I spent time on the phone with Master Bae, Sun-Book of the KHF trying to explain to him what a grandmaster was because he was unfamiliar with the concept. So if you are goping to down Master Pak for the translation you need to down Hwang Chul Kee and every other person who is doing the same thing. Otherwise you are being hypocritical. And speaking of that: isn't it hypocritical that now the son of Hwang Kee is the kwanjang of the MDK when there were people far more senior than him? If this was an American company you'd see discrimination law suits: oh wait - US SBD IS an American company so I guess good business practice is beneath them? At any rate, virtually anyone can be a kwanjang. It doesn't mean grandmaster. I think that most people put far too much stock in this term... and it is purely a western concept. fc --__--__-- Message: 15 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005 06:42:32 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Choue Chong-won Confirmed Taekwondo Chief Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Choue Chong-won Confirmed Taekwondo Chief Digital Chosunilbo Daily News in English About Korea World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) interim president Choue Chung-won was on Wednesday elected president of the organization and will head the WTF for another four years. In an election in the Spanish capital Madrid, Choue won by an overwhelming 122 out of 133 votes. Rival candidate Park Sun-jae, the president of the Italian Taekwondo Federation, won 10 votes. A total of 133 out of 177 member states participated in the election, with one vote ruled void. After his victory was confirmed, Choue said he would push for reform of the sport so the International Olympic Committee (IOC) maintains taekwondo as an official Olympic event when it meets in Singapore in July. Choue said that he invited eight IOC members to the 17th World Taekwondo Championship that starts on April 13, and vowed to make this championship the most transparent ever. The sport has recently suffered from allegations of unfair decisions. Starting with the Worlds, the WTF is adopting a sudden-death rule instead of the traditional win by judge. Park said he accepted the election result for the time being but would question the qualification of Choue after the IOC meeting. Park had earlier cast doubt on Choue's right to head the taekwondo world governing body and unsuccessfully applied for an injunction in a Korean court. The WTF dealt with 19 matters in the meeting, including designating Bejing, China the host of the 2007 World Championship. --__--__-- Message: 16 From: Ray To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005 06:47:15 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] as reported in China Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Choue Chong-won elected president of world taekwondo body China View www.chinaview.cn 2005-04-13 10:25:16 MADRID, Apr. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- South Korea's ChoueChong-won has been elected president of the World Taekwondo Federation at a general assembly on the eve of taekwondo's world championships here Tuesday. Choue defeated challenger Jun Jae Park 122-10 to win a four-year term. Choue has been interim president since last June. Park had been acting president until then. Choue's campaign was based on a package of reforms to clean up the sport's organization. The world federation approved the reforms in principle on Tuesday and are likely to formalize them later thismonth. Choue said the reforms dealt with from competition methods and marketing proposals, to anti-doping measures and administrative transparency. --__--__-- Message: 17 Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005 07:15:59 -0700 (PDT) From: brent b To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Some people seem to be hung up on rank and titles Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net JC, My cup does not runneth over. Actually, we sound pretty much as if we agree. Would I tell an instructor he sucks - no. Do I challenge them - no. I simply wouldn't go back and train with them any more. I have worked with many folks that outrank me, lots of them only once as they did not have anything for me to really learn. I have also worked with folks lower ranked than me who have been able to teach me quite a bit. I'll train with just about anyone once. I'll give them the respect they are due. If I feel I can learn from them then I'll come back again, and again. If I'm looking to train AND LEARN from someone, they need to be able to show me what they have and that what they have is going to allow me to grow as a martial artist. I've worked with instructors that I did not like personally but they had so much to offer me as a martial artist that I put up with the bull just to learn what they had to teach. If I'm checking out a school for the first time, I don't check out the instructor. I look over the students first. The students are going to tell me what kind of instructor they have just by watching them. I am constantly asked about some of the other local schools in the area by folks. I've checked them all out. I only direct folks to a few of them. There are way too many that are of the MacDojang model. The ones I send students to I count as my peers even though I 'outrank' some of them. I've been rambling quite a bit here and I doubt if I have clearly stated my position. I tend to be blunt verse elegant with my written word. The bottem line is this - The folks I work with do not worry about rank. When I see folks going off on this it grates me some. Rank and titles don't seem to be an issue in our organization and maybe that's the beauty of it. It's an independant organization and there is not politics involved. Like I said - I'm rambling - time to go back into lurk mode again. Brent (gotta stay off that soup box) Balfanz From: "Gladewater SooBahkDo" Subject: [The_Dojang] Master titles Some people seem to be hung up on rank and titles As for the statement made by Mr. Balfanz "Show me what you have on the mat and I'll let you know if you can teach me" It sounds like his cup is to full. I understand what he is saying and I respect his position, but If I would have said that to my instructor I may not have lived so see the second class. It is simply disrespectful. I think you should research the instructor you choose before you join a school, but to challenge them may not be the smartest way. JC --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
