In fact, I usually wear a non-descript hanbok when I teach and sometimes under it a traditional cord belt that is blue and white. The regard I have due me is solely from my actions and I want those actions to be the stick by which I am graded. Not because I obtained XYZ dan. f. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 15 Apr 2005 18:48:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Bruce Sims To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Okay, but what about the Other shoe??...... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray: "....> If I am understanding the oral tradition at all correctly there were Korean > ex-pat who returned to Korea after WW II. Apparently they had some rank in > whatever it was that they studied in Japan. Right so far? Correct for a couple of the kwan heads like Lee Won-kuk and Ro Byung-jik. But not correct for Hwang Kee and other kwan heads. ...." But putting to one side Who had rank, I am understanding that NONE of these folks actually had what we would consider today to be sufficient rank to provide for a functioning hierarchy. Isn't that why they had to start promoting themselves and each other. I mean, even if a person has a 2 or 3rd dan, strictly speaking, that is not really enough to run an organization, right? I am wondering why these guys would have even bothered with rank. a.) It wasn't part of Korean arts. b.) They didn't have enough to make it work appropriately. c.) They must have KNOWN it would raise questions to DIY promote if people found and out --- and it would be just a matter of time before people found out. What the heck?? Thoughts? The actual clip is of an instructor beating his students with a stick, punches, and kicks. He threatens the cameraman a few times, too.
