To use spacers to build confidence in children is a honorable idea but as you stated may build a false since of confidence. For my students to small to break a 12 x 12 I" board I simply cut the board to a small dimension maybe 6" x 12" by 1" thick. When they can break that with good technique we move to a full size board. My point is if you can't break two boards stacked with out spacers don't try to fool the public or yourself into believing you can by using spacers. Just demonstrate what you can do or practice your technique until you can break two or more with out the use of spacers. I gain nothing IMHO by showing off to the public. My students break (although rarely practiced in class) to gauge power and accuracy. When we demo at some event. We demo our true power and accuracy. We don't try and build it up by using spacers so the public thinks we are something we are not. That goes against the philosophy we practice. Moo Duk Kwan (Duk--Virtue-- like humility) You are right that I could use the big tall guys to demo submission and often I do, Striking is a completely different aspect of training. Mrs. Sell will be the very first Women to attempt a Kukkiwon 8th Dahn test. It is reported that she has performed well at all of her pretests and is training diligently in preperation for her test. I wanted to be the first to congratulate her in a public forum, and commend her for her accomplishments to TaeKwonDo. Its an honor to be able to say that the Kukkiwon recognized its first 9th Dahn ( GM Edward Sell) male and 8th Dahn (GM Brenda Sell) female outside the Korean Nationality, and they are both Americans. Also, they are married, and that is a unique first also. Congratulations to them both on their accomplishments and the example they have set for American's who participate in TaeKwonDo. Just curious, and you don't have to answer is you don't want to. How did you end up practicing a KMA? I was young, intrigued (like so many) by MA movies. Did judo for 6 months or so, then saw an ad in the paper promoting hapkido as being the complete martial art. And switched. At that time (I was 13 or something) I hardly knew where Korea was. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Greenbrier Tae Kwon Do Academy" To: "Dojang Digest" Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 21:36:12 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: TKD & Hapkido Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net DougM my man, all you have to do is hop on a plane or find your way by other means to Jackson, Mississippi during one of Master J.R. West's seminars held twice a year. Take it from a fellow TKDoist who enjoys a little Hapkido from time to time. Being a Yellow Belt, hopefully your instructor has introduced you to the theory of Um and Yang. With this in mind, TKD and Hapkido work great together to form the whole. Or at least that's what I think.....:) James Morgan www.gtkda.com --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "Greenbrier Tae Kwon Do Academy" To: "Dojang Digest" Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 21:36:14 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Breaking Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Since we've been on the subject of breaking for a little bit I'd like to get everyone's answers on how many boards/concrete slabs have you broken with a single strike. I don't want this to be a "brag-fest" by any means. I just keep thinking about the clips and pics I have seen of Master Hee Il Cho's breaks. Now THAT is some serious breakin' going on! Mr. Dave Weller was very kind to send me a pic of his instructor breaking with the lung punch he mentioned. It is an excellent picture of an awesome break for sure. So for all of you out there, what are your stories and do you have pics to share of these breaks? For me, the biggest break I've ever done is 4 2-inch concrete slabs with a palm strike, spaced of course. I do not have a picture of it, wish I did. The most amazing break I've seen in person so far was during a tournament in Harrisonburg, VA back in the 80's when a guy broke 5 1-inch boards, unspaced, with a spearhand. That just blew my mind. Still does when I think about it. To those who take the time to do it, thanks for sharing.
