My wife practices and I do not recommend her testing for that very reason. I always have her looked at by someone else. To me, that's more impressive than a 20ish year old doing the exact same break. I've also seen a speed break through four 1x10x10 boards with a right hand reverse punch while he held them in his left hand. Personally, I'm hard to impress by 190lb+ doing power breaks. Big deal, when looking at the two elements that make up power, they've got the weight part down. Just like I'm not real impressed by a slight built man knocking out 100 pushups or showing off speed breaks. TY Kim is clearly Korean. Actually Kevin said both. The first para stated that she was the first woman to test for 8th Dan. In the second para he indicated first non-Korean woman. Regarding learning things that don't work, this comes up more over in the FMA/Eskrima world given Dan Inosanto's "Absorb what is useful" quote. Some techniques work better for people with certain builds or extreme flexibility, etc, etc... e.g. a technique that may not work, or not work well, for me may work very well for someone 9" shorter than I. As a teacher we must not toss out the few techniques that are suboptimal for us since they may be optimal for many of our students. I believe that was the intent of the original post. He always seems to out do himself every time. I met a lot of new friends and visited with old ones. I want to thank Master West for spending time with me and talking with me about Hapkido and History. I learned he knew how to speak, wirte and read Korean. I was very impressed. I will continue to try to make his seminars as I feel he will leave his mark on the Hapkido community along with the other greats. Thank you all once again. About 11 years ago (or so) my instructor took a bunch of us to Boulder, CO because GM Kim and her group was going to be doing a demonstration there. Unfortunately, it was not the _martial arts_ demonstration we had been hoping for. GM Kim is indeed an impressive woman (and I don't think I'm ever going to forget that she bonked me on the head with a board to show that it wasn't fake) but I wish I could have seen her group's martial perspective. Of course, since the demo/seminar was in Boulder, I should have known that it was going to be more energy-oriented than martial-oriented. :) (For who have no idea what I'm talking about, Boulder is known for being----um---*extremely* New Age in certain aspects.) Last weekend, in the 2005 World Championships in Madrid, Spain, the obscure sport got it. Three American siblings, Steven, Mark and Diana Lopez, each won world titles on the same weekend. Not only that, but they were coached by eldest brother Jean, also coach to bronze medalist Mandy Meloon. "I cried," said Steven, 26, two-time Olympic gold medalist. "To have my brother and sister win it, the same day . . . I saw history being made with my very eyes." It was a remarkable feat that sent U.S. Olympic Committee researchers flipping through record books. "As far as we can tell, it's something that has never happened before," said Bill Kellick, U.S. tae kwon do spokesman. "In the Olympic sports, it's never been done." Sure makes fixing all those holes in the garage wall worth it. Before Jean, 31, opened his tae kwon do gym near the family home in Sugar Land, Texas, a Houston suburb, the Lopezes trained in the garage. "Our parents spent a lot of money repairing the walls," said Jean. "We'd try to fix it first, but it became so frequent, we'd put up posters to hide the holes." Ondina and Julio Lopez get a benefit, however, in having tae kwon do athletes around the house. "My parents have their own built-in security," Jean said. In the past, tae kwon do has made headlines for reasons other than medals. In 2000, an injured Esther Kim gave up her spot on the U.S. Olympic team to best friend Kay Poe. Poe did not medal in Sydney. Since then, the sport has been mired in scandal and mismanagement. The USOC took over tae kwon do's governing body last year because of financial and leadership trouble, and suspended its residency program at the Olympic Training Center here. Dr. Un Yong Kim, former head of tae kwon do's international federation, is serving a two-year term for embezzlement and bribery. Now, finally, some good news. Next question: Can the Lopez trio pull it off at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing? "That's the plan," said Steven, 26, the only athlete to win two tae kwon do Olympic gold medals and three straight world championships since the sport became an Olympic medal sport in 2000. He's the family celebrity, named as one of the 50 most eligible bachelors by People magazine in 2004. He'll have to share some fame now with Mark, 22, and Diana, 21. Steven won his title April 15. Two days later, Diana followed, then Mark later that day. Diana said the title helped make up for not making the 2004 Olympic team. She came one match away, losing to Nia Abdallah, who won silver in Athens. There was little question she'd follow her brothers into the sport. Because the United States qualified only two spots, Mark would have had to beat Steven for a team berth. In the pre-trial tournament in Colorado Springs last May, Mark was eliminated one match before he would have met his brother in the trials. When Diana was 7 or 8 years old and Jean and Steven competed internationally, they'd call home with updates. "We'd get phone calls at 2 a.m., saying, `Oh, we won,'" Diana said. She'd tell her mom: "'I want to call you guys one day and tell you I won.'" This week, said Diana, "That's what happened." --__--__-- Message: 12 From: "Bob Banham" To: Date: Sun, 24 Apr 2005 20:31:14 +0100 Subject: [The_Dojang] N.Korea Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The first pictures from N. He is awesome indeed. That 11 board instep roundhouse kick break would be right up there with the baseball bat breaks using the shin! Ouch! I can only imagine how one would properly condition the instep and shin for such breaks. I don't see myself attempting such breaks anytime soon. Thanks for the info. These Masters can perform very difficult jump kicks including 540’s (one and one-half revolutions in the air) with 3 kicks and back flips with both feet kicking. Their jumping abilities and kicking techniques are outstanding. It is my impression that demo teams have become a very big deal in Korea and there is now an annual “World” competition in the ROK, which is open to other countries. I have approximately 6 hours of video from “the 1st World Muya Championship” in 2003. It is a great show of outstanding kicks, acrobatics, team synchronized forms to music, coordinated team self-defense demos and power breaking with some kind of hard tiles, bricks or blocks. In these competitions they use the large thin boards for the jump kicks and flying kicks. They will run up several team members’ backs to break a board approximately 10 to 15 feet above the ground. They perform back flips and break two separate boards, one with each foot, held directly over their shoulders approximately 7 to 10 feet above the ground. Their team members (10 to 20) will hold boards in a line and the breaker will go down the line breaking each board with a spinning kick such as turning hook kick without stopping. They also perform 540’s (one and one-half revolutions in the air) while performing 3 separate kicks on each pass and breaking a board. There are three holders for this jump kick. One holds a board just above the knee, one at chest level and one usually above the head. They perform flying sidekicks over standing team members and many other spectacular kicks. As one may conclude that it is not about power, but speed, jumping, accuracy and kicking technique. I believe this is the reason they use these large thin boards. I have used some of the boards and they are not pinewood, but a hard wood from Korea. They do not break as easy as pinewood, but they are not hard to break. As noted above, I believe they are used because the purpose of the demo is to focus on the kicking techniques and acrobatics and NOT the power. Having said all that, I can assure you that their kicks are very powerful. I hope my comments may shed some light on the board issue for some of you.
