At this level, I believe the board is capable of taking all things into consideration and make a decision on the merits. Perhaps I have too much faith, perhaps not.... If memory serves, it is not her husband that recommends/promotes her to her TKD CDK rank, but her husband's instructor in CDK - Park, Hae Man. [I believe this is also your CDK instructor's instructor.] I believe this is also the person who promoted her to rank in Kukki-TKD. Also, as you know, 8th and 9th dan KKW tests are done at the KKW. So, I assume her husband will not even be on the testing board. As long as her minimum time requirements are in and she knows her material and is willing to put herself on the line in Korea, what is the big deal on a recommendation? So, I believe that takes care of nepotism on recommendations/testing boards!? There is always going to be the appearance of favoritism when dealing spouse to spouse, but the opposite can also be true. This is why most people have other seniors test their spouses. A practice I've always used. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > From: "Frank Clay" > If a technique does not work for you, why would you pass it on? Is that not > akin to teaching something you know doesn't work? > f. Not remotely. After all, a number of techniques designed for a 6'4" 240 pound person would be sub-optimal for at me 5'8" and 165. That doesn't mean the techniques don't work---they just won't work well for me. On the other hand, I certainly need to know them if I plan to instruct in the art, because I cannot assume that all of my students will be my exact body type. The art that I practice has a set of techniques that covers a range of options for all body types. Indeed, I would personally only use a fraction of them. This, of course, has nothing to do with whether or not it will work well for someone else, or whether or not I should _know_ them. On a separate note: > The original poster indicated that Mrs. Sell would be the first mom-Korean > to test for the rank of 8th Dan. TY Kim is clearly Korean. No, the original post stated that she was the first woman to test for 8th dan. A later comment put both she and her husband into the "first AND non-Korean" categories. Which is why my email asked for clarification, in addition to providing information. > That being said, it would be more impressive if her husband was not a ninth > dan. As he is, one can always argue that it is nepotism. My wife practices > and I do not recommend her testing for that very reason. I always have her > looked at by someone else. I am mildly curious where you get the impression from the first poster that her husband would be conducting the test? Considering that the post said quite clearly that she would be testing at the Kukkiwon? Is there more or different information you have? It seems odd to automatically argue that it will be nepotism. Or is does "test for 8th dan at the Kukkiwon" somehow not being "looked at by someone else?" I note that you used the word "recommend" as opposed to "judge." I have no idea whether or not her husband recommended her, but I would tend to assume that testing at the Kukkiwon would indeed manage to qualify as non-partial judges. As such, if they pass her, I doubt that anyone would "always argue it is nepotism."
