The right answer is, bow the way your instructor bows. Seriously though. If it is someone you trust and respect, look at the floor. If it is someone you are not sure about, I always bow 45 degrees and keep my head down so as to always be able to see their feet, hips and hands. It is a safe way to show respect. The real question you should ask is Why do I bow? Edward tim collatz wrote: >what is the correct way to bow? When our old insurance company stopped renewing their martial arts line of business, we investigated and found this company. Thank goodness, we have never had a situation where we needed to use it, but I am happy with our coverages should the need arise. Price depends upon the number of students, but converages are usually reasonable because as an industry, we are a low risk.. Just do your homework and you will be fine. Good luck! To keep your eyes on the person you are bowing to shows a lack of trust. Nobody can really respect a person they don't trust. I teach to bow at a 45 degree angle with the eyes facing downward. If the student has reason to not trust the person they are bowing to, they should simply not bow at all. JCGet more from the Web. Head down or head up always looking at > the person you are bowing to? A way which I see often now in Korea goes like this. Insa bangbub (method of greeting) Place your hands in front of your belly button. Right over left for men. Left over right for women. Make a bow of 45 degrees, keep your head straight. So you look down 45 degrees. Keep the bow for about three seconds. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ Dutch HKD Federation http://www.sangmookwan.com/ SangMooKwan International Training Center Korea --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "James" To: Subject: RE: [The_Dojang] bow Date: Mon, 16 May 2005 22:54:08 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I was always told to bow but keep your eyes on your opponent. Probably depends on the art I suppose, but the way my instructor explained it to me is that you bow at about 45 degrees with the head facing downward. The way he explained it is that if keep your head up, you are showing a lack of respsct in that you don't trust the opponent to be honorable...you don't trust them. If you bow *too* low though, it's also a sign of lack of respect because you are essentially saying that you don't respect your opponents ability because you are putting yourself in such a vulnerable position.
