Also I do not know what happened between you and your teacher but if have a clean counsience talk to GM Ji and ask him to give you a hand by making a plan of work for you to follow. I do not believe that you should take care of your family and then train the Martial Art of HapKiDo. Wet on trucking teaching and at the same time take care of your family. Program yourself ! He is an excellent martial artist and a great teacher there is just a difference of opinions in the route he is expecting me to take. He made it loud and clear that it was his way or leave Sin Moo....so I left. I have had conversations with a Sin Moo Grand Master who has viewed my techniques and he told me I could teach just not to grade a black belt. The GM said I needed to teach to become better and I do see a large difference in my technique. When you have to explain and demonstrate a technique to a student you view it from a different angle, this has been a large growth period for me. I belive that GM is no longer in Sin Moo and is too far away to train with. I have never personally contacted Doju JI, maybe because I don't think I could afford to train with him. I have been trying to watch for seminars in the northwest US and maybe I will try to attend. For now I don't want to chase orgs for belts so until I have enough time and money (full time job, 2 active kids and 1 wife working but attending college, 1 dog, 1 cat and a fishing/ski boat)to further myself in the system. I will take what advise Master Jaques gave me when I left Mcbride BC "take care of your family first, then train". I've met Master Mike Forester (great technique) of Prince George BC and trained a little with his son Lee Forester (Nice Guy). They are Song Moo Kwan aren't they?? Tracy Bodnarchuk male version....Thanks for the name Mom and Dad. Hi Tracy Bodnarchuk, I am Ramon Navarro, a Song Moo Kwan HapKiDo from the country of Panama, been teaching 28 years and am under Grand Master Park, SongIL 9th Dan whom was a direct student and reseived his 9th Dan from Grand Master Ji, HanJae. I will recomend you write both your teacher and Master Ji explaining your situation and expect good results as answers to your dilema. Ask them for help and backup. I am sure in one way or the other you should get it. Where I study, we do NOT look at the other person, signifying trust between brothers and that we practice a "defensive" art. This is the same problem faced by teachers, baby sitters and priests. These populations have the highest frequency of abuse to children because after all, they have the most access. As a school teacher and martial artist I am particularly appalled when I hear these things. The actions of these morons has horrible effects on children and smears us all. We must supervise our junior instructors more carefully and parents must stop being so trusting. There is just so much wrong with martial arts today that it clouds the infinite good. So now in addition to the scam artists, chubbee wannabees, frauds, make believe martial arts web site con artists... we now have to look out for the sick, disgusting evil degenerates that prey on kids. Is a signed liability release good enough for studios? What is a fair price for insurance?" MC Reply, Dear Patrick, Glad to help here. Only once in 14 years of teaching have I had to file a claim, and only one other serious injury (stitches) that the school paid for because the student didn't have any insurance for our policy at the time to piggy back with. The injury that we filed a claim for involved a 12 year old girl walking into a well timed front leg side kick to the ribs. The ribs were bruised, but not cracked. We did transport via ambulance to a hospital, where they took x-rays. The mother paid her normal co-pay and our school paid nothing. The two insurance companies split the bill. The ambulance ride alone would have been half a year's premium and the x-rays the other half. So yes if you teach and pay rent you should have coverage. The other theory is the litigation concept of "deep pocket" theory. People who have a higher likelyhood of ability to pay are always included in a law suit, so if you own your home or any other source of equity that is more valuable than your martial arts business, you should have insurance coverage that is more attractive than the equity in your home and/or your aggregate net worth. For about $500 per year for the first 30 students and about $9-$12 per additional student you should be able to get reasonable coverage. Be sure to list your landlord as additional insured, and forward a copy of the renewed policy every year. The Martial Arts Group advertises in a lot of MA magazines and allows a half down and two more monthly payments option. Another low cash flow method is USSSA or AAU. You pay a club membership fee and get your competitors to pay thier annual membership. Only drawbacks are adults are usually double the annual price for youths, and everyone in the club must be a member of the sports association so you have to pay for non-competitors. One way around this is an annual registration fee of about $25, which would cover all your insurance costs, even if you did the commercial policy like MAG. For me, the most memorable and impressive part was the breaking. He performed Chung Ki Hyung with a board break for each strike. It took a great deal of coordinating with the board holders (who did a great job...how's your nose Frank?). It went so smooth and it was so awesome it actually brought tears to my eyes. Tuan, you did GREAT; your Ukes certainly showed perseverance; and Lloyd Martin, you did a wonderful job of conducting the test. Tuan does have a lot of friends and great support by Master Hodder, Mr. Martin, and the rest of us at Hodders Korean Martial Arts. It's not an accident; Tuan is a great person, a respected Martial Artist, and a true friend to all of us. Surprisingly, I'm going to come in on the side of tradition on this one. The idea that one should watch his opponent while bowing comes from Bruce Lee in "Enter the Dragon." Now, there are an awful lot of martial artists around the world who's ideas about the arts come from Lee and other movie stars, but the simple fact is that watching someone while you bow misses the whole idea of the bow. You are showing respect. The Chinese emperor used to demand a full kowtow (full bow from kneeling position), even from the U.S. envoy. Same thing for the Japanese emperor, but don't show the back of your neck. For most bows, look at the person's knees. To your buddies, a quick nod is ok. And if you don't trust the guy, then don't bow, or bow from a good distance away. If you don't like the bowing tradition, which is Asian after all, then just shake hands. Or express respect however you like. But for me the only place I expect someone to look me in the eye while they bow is the Cobra-kai school.
