Thank you Dr. Kimm for bringing the history and culture of Korea alive for me. Thanks Mrs. Kimm for bringing the art of Korean shopping alive. There were many great events on the trip but a highlight for me was seeing Grand Master West being presented an award and recognition by the ROK government for 40 years service to South Korea for spreading Korean culture by teaching the art of HapKiDo. It was great getting to travel with and meet some of the USKMAF people outside the confines of a seminar setting. I'm still kind of jet lagged so I'll post more about the trip later. Regards to all, Don Kirsch --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Ethical question To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 22 May 2005 07:41:23 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed here or not. If it has, please let me know. I have studied TKD and HKD and earned Dan ranks in both. After reading posts here and conducting my own research, I have found that the style of HKD that I studied was incomplete. I looked at MArc Tedeschi's book "Hapkido", Ji Han JAe's Sin Moo HKD, as well as other styles and found my style lacking in some areas, most notably in the study of pressure points and healing. My question is this:Would it be wrong to study at a school that teaches a more complete form of HKD and not study at the HKD school I'm familiar with? (FYI-I was an instructor at my TKD/HKD school for several years. I haven't trained there for a few years now, but I remain good friends with the owner and students) Furthermore, the one time I met the local instructor for the more complete HKD, I was not thrilled. He seemed arrogant and almost bully-ish (is that even a word?). I'm just curious as to what others may think. > Try to learn real Hapkido, but still attempt to remain friends with your former instructor. If he is a true friend he will eventually forgive you for studying with a different instructor. imho. I regret not being present at the test. Having been with you on the mat and witnessing both your ability to give and receive I was already convinced you were ready for promotion. Hope we can get together for some training soon and I think its about time Frank became the "crash test dummy". But I also tell them when they teach to call what there are teaching by its name. One of my instructors went to study Brazilian Jujutsu, and he mixed it with Hapkido throws and locks. When I watched his class, I made sure he pointed out what was Hapkido and what was not. Bruce Lee often said to use that which works. But I also say, remain true to your art or system and use that which works. There should be nothing wrong with picking up from other systems what you lack, if it works, use it. You are at a Dan level and know your art, so grow. Master Patrick Williams House Of Ohshinsul-Arkansas Hapkido Club Ray wrote: > I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed here or not.
