In answer to the question about kicking, here's what my master says: A kick is, in some ways, a very complex thing. The relationship between the legs of the kicker is important. Which leg is kicking, what is the other leg doing? The way in which reaction and force are being applied will depend on this. This is also another crucial part of defining the kick. Will it be a "simple" front kick, a turning kick or somthing more spectacular? Third, where will it land? The target is another crucial part of the kicking equation. BUT Bruce Lees says: Before a studied the art, a kick was just a kick and a punch was just a punch. When i studied the art, a kick was more than a kick and a punch was more than a punch. When i mastered the art, a kick was just a kick and a punch was just a punch. Not only did he conduct two very good seminars; one for children only and one for adults only; he thoughoughly worked my black belts and myself into the ground on Friday! It is always a great learning experience to get some one-on-one with him. For those of you that have have not been to one of Master Hodder's seminars, you are really missing out. Again, Thank you sir from everyone in West By-God Virginia. Oh and by the way, Master Hodder learned something from us as well. Five thousand competitors from throughout the world will compete in 64 divisions for the prestigious title of World Champion. The event remains Little Rock's largest convention and attracts competitors ranging in age from three to 83. ATA, internationally headquartered in Little Rock, has more than 350,000 members - adults and children - on five different continents. The ATA World Championships has advanced so quickly in size and scope that it necessitated a move for its opening ceremonies to ALLTEL Arena in North Little Rock, paving the way for many more people to experience the sport of taekwondo. All other World Championship events will continue to be held at the Little Rock Statehouse Convention Center. The modern martial art and sport of taekwondo is distinguished by its signature fast, high and spinning kicks. Taekwondo features a combination of four disciplines: sparring, patterns, self-defense and breaktest. The popularity of the sport exploded in 2000 when the Olympics inaugurated taekwondo as an official Olympic sport. Organizers plan for the Fri., June 17 opening ceremonies, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., to feature the most ambitious and dazzling pyrotechnics show ever presented at ALLTEL Arena. One of the main attractions will include a record 35 people becoming Taekwondo Masters, with others testing for 7th and 8th Degree Black Belts. Well-known Little Rock instructor Master Kathy Lee will be promoted to the prestigious title of Senior Master. G.K. Lee, husband of Kathy Lee and a Senior Master, will be testing for the title of Chief Master. Individuals who have qualified in the Top Ten in their division will compete for the title World Champion during the opening ceremonies as well. Weeklong activities will feature business seminars, awards presentations, specialized training and rank testing. Two days of the tournament will feature the new ATA-Xtreme competition, which was added for the first time this year. The junior competition will be held 8:30 - 10 a.m. Sat., June 18, followed by the adult competition Sun., June 19, 8:30 - 10 a.m. Another highlight of opening ceremonies will be the presentation of ATA-Xtreme by Xtreme Martial Arts (XMA) creator Mike Chat, known for his role as the Blue Power Ranger in the children's television series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The high-energy, exhilarating performance of taekwondo will also include a specially selected group of ATA-Xtreme athletes, some chosen from the Little Rock area. ATA 9th Degree Black Belt, Grand Master Soon Ho Lee anticipates another banner year for the event. "We are thrilled to have part of our event in ALLTEL Arena this year. We want as many people as possible to come and check out some of the world's greatest martial artists," said Lee. "We invite everyone, young and old, to join us for this phenomenal event." "We are fortunate to once again host this truly spectacular event," said Dan O'Byrne, Chief Executive Officer of the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau. "The ATA is a key part of our community and provides a tremendous economic development boost and dramatic entertainment event for Arkansas. We look forward to welcoming the thousands who will visit our city and state." General admission tickets for the opening ceremonies are on sale now for $10 and are available through Ticketmaster online at www.ticketmaster.com under the name TKD Gold ATA Opening Ceremonies, by phone 501-975-7575, or at any Ticketmaster outlet. In addition, tickets may be purchased at the ALLTEL Arena Box Office prior to or the day of the event. For group sales of 20 or more tickets, five free tickets will be given through the ALLTEL Arena Box Office (501-975-9000). Eternal Grand Master H.U. Lee founded the ATA in 1969 to provide students the highest quality martial arts instruction available in a safe and positive learning environment that people of all ages could enjoy. Lee died in October 2000. The first World Championship tournament was held in 1990. The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) is an affiliate of the World Traditional Taekwondo Union (WTTU), also composed of the Songahm Taekwondo Federation and World Martial Arts. "Eternal GM" is the title given to H.U.Lee at his funeral by a significant list of Korean Masters and Grandmasters (I was there). People do "test" for the ranks of 7th and 8th, in front of the crowd in a special ceremonial testing. Forms, weapons, Board Breaks, etc. If I rember correctly, I do recall one person not passing to 7th several years ago because he looked terrible, but it may have been 6th. Ok, not defending or promoting any of the above, just passing on info as I know it. As I said, I left the ATA a couple of years ago, so some things may have changed. Peace Dante Dante J.
