It is a regional tournament for region 6 Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. If anyone from the digest would like to visit as a spectator. I would love to meet you. I will have my school logo on the back of my do bak (Gladewater Soo Bahk Do). Please feel free to say hello. I will however have tournament responsibilities like judging, and organizing as well as a demo. If not I understand but wanted you to all know you were invited. JC Get more from the Web. I started out in ITF in Texas, and spent the better part of a decade in that system back in the 70's before the kukkiwon was created. So yes, I teach the flashy kicks you mentioned. But I confess, we spend very little time on them in class. As far as hapkido kicks are concerned, the hip, knee, shin, ankle kicks are good for application. But Ray said it well when he said "To my way of thinking... HKD has more kicks than does TKD, but it has less kicking. There is a big diff, yes?". In other words our emphasis is different than taekwondo. I spend about 10-15 minutes in class on leg techniques. That is about it. Remember that leg techniques are only one small aspect of hapkido techniques and I like to see a balance in the training at our dojang. As far as your last question is concerned, each dojang is going to be different. I teach a lot of taekwondo yudanja (the majority of my colored belts here in Fargo have at least a chodan in taekwondo), so I don't need to teach them what they already know as there are some fine traditional taekwondo dojang here. You also have the more modern schools of thought in hapkido like Master Ji's sinmoo that emphasize a lot of kicking and the 'old school' methods, that don't place much emphasis on kicks. Both are still the 'real deal'. It sounds to me that you have found a happy balance in between ITF taekwondo and hapkido. Keep it up... Jere R.
