I'm in my second year of taekwondo and am intrigued my the self defence techniques we're taught. Although I can see how effective they are at training, does anyone have examples of where a technique has been used in a real life situation and what the result was please? I am a big guy (wide, not tall) and at age 40 I already have enough flexibility problems without adding the uniform issues. I find that I have to "hike up" my pants all the time to get them out of the way so I can get decent extension on my kicks. Otherwise I am fighting more fabric than opponent :-) Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is this a common problem or is it just me? Are there any martial arts pants out there that are more forgiving? I'm just using the standard white cotton student uniform - I have tried 3 different brands of basic student uniforms and they all have the same issue. My friend stands 5'7, he applied a wrist lock and capped it off with a right forearm across the bent wrist. Needless to say, it put an end to playing football for several weeks. I would mention names but that wouldn't be right. I'll say it was in El Paso, Texas. Patrick Williams 5th Dan House of Ohshinsul-Arkansas Hapkido Club Felicity Catherine Jones wrote: Hello to all. I do this on all my unifroms and I get a really nice fit. HKD has more kicks than does TKD, but it has less kicking. There is a big diff, yes?"...." Not to put too fine a point on this but during the recent Australian Intensive with Dojunim Kim, the Hapkiyusool people started every class with the standard warm-up. The latter half of this warm-up is a complete cataloguing of all 16 strikes and 17 kicks for the Yong Sul Kwan done as three reps with the left and three with the right. After the warm-up is completed we do not return to these kicks and strikes for the balance of the class. The remaining hour and a half is focused completely on Hapkiyusool grappling. Now, it is true that with such a class in the morning and another in the evening, one could argue that 396 reps is ample. Multiply that times 10days and that may seem like a lot. But the reason I share this is that those techniques are not expanded on such as one might see in, say, TKD with bag-work, hand-targets and one-steps. I suppose one could also argue on behalf of practicing such kicks and strikes to the bag in ones' own time, but it would be just that and not an activity set aside for in class. FWIW.
